It doesn't "die" novelty, its at the winter solstice, it is "us" who are reaching that point on our axial orbit that means the sun appears for the lowest amount of time on December 21st in the northern hemisphere, actually the sun stays the same, it is we, who as you so melodramatically put it "die".
