Wow what a great picture. Even staring at that for a while, hurts my eyes, and it's just a picture, goes to show how bright the real thing is!

Wow! :-6 :cool: What a great photo. Did that come from the solar flares we were experiencing last week?

Hard to believe that its just a ball of hydrogen and helium with a diameter 1,000 times greater than our own planet (we would fit nicely into the little gaps caused by the flares), that the sun has been undergoing a massive nuclear fusion reaction since it started to shine 5,000,000,000,000 years ago, resulting in the constant heat and light we experience and with without which we would never have come into existence, never mind survive now. Despite how bright it is, and the warmth of a summer day in a tropical lattitude, and how large in the sky the sun appears, its actually 93,000,0000,000 miles away (as opposed to the moon, which is only 250,000 miles away, i.e. next door). It takes light 8 minutes to leave the surface of the sun and then reach our atmosphere. All true. The sun is not a god, but without it we would surely not be here. :-6

Erm, yeah? Don't know if you are being religious or sarcastic there, so I will just agree so we can all move on. :thinking:

That's due to hit the Earth today (Wed. Dec. 20).

Looking forward to a spectacular Aurora Borealis display on the Solstice. What a great way to mark the Yule !

The sun "walks on water." Just as Jesus.

Sorry but I can only find one analogy that works;

I'm SOOOO jealous, I wish we had Auroras here. :(

Well, I haven't seen any from this latest solar outburst, even though it was supposed to be huge, according to last week's newscasts.

I remember walking the GF's dog one hot August night (early morning, actually,) and the entire sky was pulsating with yellow/green light. Waves and waves flickering overhead, all the way to the horizon. That was about 1990.

There was a brilliant red patch of auroral light in the northwest sky in mid-November 1992. It was like a fiery sunset, only in a jet black night sky. The local paper ran a beautiful colour photo of it the next day.

Scientists claim that the Aurora Borealis are silent, yet many people claim they can hear them. I've heard them as a soft, hissing noise, punctuated with a snappy little zip as they streak across the sky.

The Inuit say it is the voice of the ancestors.

Hope you had a wonderful Solstice. It was beautiful here. Unseasonably mild (8C), and brilliantly sunny.

Many ancient tribes worshiped the sun. Little did they know just how important it is to the very existence of life on the earth.
