200 Tickets Issued Thursday

One week after motorists in Orange County, Fla., were ticketed by officers dressed as Santa's elves, hundreds of drivers received speeding tickets Thursday by the Grinch and other Dr. Seuss characters.

The Seuss-costumed officers nabbed speeders near John Young Parkway and President's Drive Thursday.

Deputies clocked cars using a radar gun and then dispatched other officers to pull over the motorists and issue the driver a ticket.

The Grinch was responsible for ticketing about 200 drivers during the operation.

The sheriff's Enforcing Limits and Fining or ELF operation, in which officers were dressed as elves, ticketed about 150 drivers in two hours last week.

Some people said using a holiday icon to enforce the law didn't seem right.

"That's specifically why we didn't use Santa Claus," Ken Wyne of the Orange County Sheriff's Office said. "We didn't choose a nativity scene. We chose an elf. An elf is known for their impish behavior. If you're going to speed in Orange County, you never know who's going to be on the street corner."

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said they will continue to use similar decoys throughout the holiday season.

The officers' makeup Thursday was done by costume artists at Univeral Studios Orlando, the report said.

It's a rather crass idea.

I'm assuming Universal Studios owns the copyright to the Suess characters, since they participated in the scheme.

Theodore Giesel is probably spinning in his grave.
