Dog Medical Question

My dog is lying around more, limped for a couple of days, and now she will walk upstairs but will not jump on the bed. She is only 6 1/2. Could be arthritis already???

What kind of dog is it?

She is a mutt. Mostly beagle/bassett hound-ish. She is kind of stocky, but has lost some weight-she is on a diet.

Veterinarians look for subtle signs in patients in order to discover early stages of arthritis since outright limping or vocalizing from pain may be the end stage of long-term joint degeneration. Typically what will be noticed first are an increased weight gain, sleeping more, less interest in playing, and a change in attitude or alertness. If your dog becomes less excited to greet you when you come home or vacillates about jumping up on the couch or becomes overly cautious when climbing stairs, be aware that these may be the first indicators of joint discomfort from arthritis.

It could also be that he just hurt himself. My mom used to put a paracetamol into a bit of chocolate for our old dog and it helped.

Take your girl to the vet to be safe.

My rottweiler limped a couple of times early in the morning a couple of February's ago. What we put down to simple arthritis in an old dog turned out to be Osteosarcoma

My previous dog had arthritis. It started in her hips and she was very tender if you attempted to lift her hindquarters..It could be lot of different things though definetely get her to the vet if it last more than a few days..

And it could be a simple muscle strain. But you DO need to get it checked

out.

The odds are most likely it's something simple and not dangerous or

life threatening, but you need to know.

There's some pretty great newer easily tolerated analgesics out there

if it is arthritis, you can keep the dog comfortable!!

Take a deep breath, worried momma... I've been there!!

I've experienced similar in much younger dogs, something called "Pano"

(growing pains!) but in a dog that age, that's not the problem.

You can really scare yourself thinking about this stuff, I always do

with my girl!

Good article there, if a tad alarming, but please, don't give your dog chocolate, it's toxic to them!
