If you were given $1,000 to change the life of a perfect stranger, what would you do?

Additional Details

You may have heard about the concept of paying it forward -- the idea of doing something meaningful to help someone else without asking for anything in return. So, if you were given $1,000 with the understanding that it had to be used to help others, how would you use the money and why?

Ok Gang, what do you have to say in response to this???

Read the question carefully, you are changing someones life with only $1,000....

I would be sponsering alot of the children on the angel trees. I've been in their shoes, and remember a few Christmass that if it weren't for the Jaycee's or local Lion's Club, Santa wouldn't have come that year.

In leu of my crappy weather here, I would spend the $1,000 on quality winter clothing for a homeless person. Boots, parka, socks, long underware, hat, mitts. And hope they make it through the cold northern weather we get round these parts.

Why, because this weekend we had a homeless man die due to the weather, I think a homeless person is the least equiped to handle these extreme temperatures and I would hope they would use the gift as opposed to sell it.

Grown women whooping and calling out "Oprah, Oprah" I feel embarrassed for those women.

If America wants a token rich black woman why not Condoleesa Rice? (ok I dont' believe in her politics) but she's got a brain and stealth and is in more of a position to help people (Poor) with that $1000.00.

And that's my two cents worth:driving:

was that question of Oprahs' directed to giving $1000 to the poor? I never saw the actual show, the question was posted on Yahoo Canada home page.

I think we could put a lot of twists on the Q. As in the next person you pass on the street kind of stranger or stranger of your choice yada yada, guess it depends on how nobel we feel at that moment.

Anyway ahaha Oprah sorry she isn't high on my "wanna be my friend" list

I don't mind watching Oprah sometimes. She has had some pretty good shows. However I wouldn't say her word was the Holy Grail. :wah:

OMG my sis and I were just talking about this! A month ago an acquaintance of mine called me and told me of her hardship..SHe had been with a man from the service and when he was brought home he was deemed un-fit to leave the hospital for mental reason..She had sold everything and moved her children to be in the Iowa area with him...His family had no knowledge of this and so be it--she was left homeless --She spent the rest of her savings for a hotel until she could find a house..She called me and asked what to do--I told her to get her butt up here -some how we would make this work out..I got her into my friends apartment building--put some grocery's in her frig. and helped her get a job--Actually she took my place at my old job till she finds something new--(which she did today!! YEAH) anyway.....today she pulled up in front of my house and said--here........Handing me some money--I said whats that for? She then said--"you were the only person that could help me...you opened your house to my children and me and gave me gas money and food...I want you to have this for your kids for Christmas"...I cried and cried! But like my sis said---------PAY IT FORWARD! It does happen! :-4

Answer to the question: I would buy a tombstone for the neighbor boy that was killed this past summer..His parents don't have enough money for it...

You all have wonderful answers,Even you ks.

But that kind of money does not go far.

And if I could not spend it on myself I would buy ten stars at straregestry.com and and name them after ten most influential people that changed my life.

So that I could point too the sky and tell some one great story's of great people and they can pass them along for gernerations too come.

I would give it to one of our most needy Family that is taking care of someone with ALZHEIMER'S so they can maybe have a day off and get their hair done, or nails, or go shopping for themselve. Be able to pay if necessary to have someone capable of watching their loved one while they get a much needed day off. ;)

I would probably give it to a local food bank, they can stretch it much

farther.

And as far as Oprah goes, she (with the possible exception of Bill Gates)

has used her money for more good for more people than anyone else

on earth.

The audience she (Bank of America, too) gave the money to ran across

quite a few color lines, and I never heard her once refer to anyone as

lacking in mental capacity.

People listen to her, and she can really call attention to any subject.

Get people to read books, get people to care about Katrina survivors,

many things. I fail to see how that could ever been viewed as a bad thing.

Oprah lost my respect when she gave her audience fur slippers. Mink I believe. That was no class.

A thousand dollars is relative but still wouldn't go too far. I could use it for food, for cheap clothing, maybe good enough that someone could get a job, pay a doctor bill, it could go on. Of course my answer will probably bring the wrath of Khan (or some certain someones in FG) down upon me, but I would choose to spend the money on the animals of poor people. Sometimes a pet is all a person has in the entire world. That's all the riches they have, all the love they get.Yet even though they love their pet they can't afford to fix him or her or to properly feed the pet, or especially, to pay vet bills. So that's what I would do if the stranger we're talking about is a human. If the stranger in question is an animal,(or plural) then I would spend the money on the animal(s) instead. Maybe by adopting from the pound, Or taking in a lost or abused dog. Paying to have him washed and trimmed so the mats and filth are out of his fur. trimming overlong claws. Dental help. Whatever was needed. Lots of people would help a human and there are enough who will. I choose to help the less fortunate furry ones. :)

I'm not an animal lover but I agree with you Red - a pet is often somebody's only friend and companion so that's a good plan.

Personally I would give it to a local charity which aims to help disabled or seriously ill children. I know that this charity makes a life changing difference to these children. They have in the past provided a special trike for a child who couldn't walk - within 6 months he could. They have sent the family of a terminally ill little girl to Lapland to meet Santa allowing that family to have a wonderful memory which doesn't involve hospital or illness. I'm full of admiration for the two men that runs this charity and sadly now the son of one of them has cancer - but the message of paying it forward is really shown here - so many locals have raised money to help that family it's amazing.

Did anyone watch the film Pay it Forward? It made me cry. Lots.

Do an exacta or trifecta box. You should win something. I always find that horse numbers 8, 12 and 4 give me a little something back.

Actually in Harness racing, the 8 hole is considered a bad hole. With the race bikes its alot harder to move in and out of the race, so the 8 hole usually gets left out to dry...

At least that's been my experience. I never bet the 8 horse,..never.

If I know that the 8 horse is the best horse in the race, I will either bet it to show, or I wont bet at all.

I have a friend who took a homeless girl into her home. She fed and clothed her and got her a job at the local supermarket and didn't ask for any rent for the first few months until she had sorted herself out. This girl had no one, and my friend took her into her home and her heart.

This girl paid it forward by running off with my friend's husband, whilst she was 6 months pregnant.
