I always wanted a Rott, but then I heard they eat their puppies (Males), and I lost a little respect for them. Then I thought about getting a Doberman, and I am starting to think that they might be the same way.

I will do a little research before I do get one, if I ever do.

But about the O.P, I think this correlates to people needing that macho image to appear tougher than they really are.

Where in the heck did you hear that? What a load of crap. Almost as big a load as the "study" the thread is about.

There are rottweilers and pitbulls (and about a half a million German Shepherds) that do rescue work and are certified therapy dogs. But I suppose their owners/trainers are involved in some kind of deviant behaviour too.

BTW - I am living in an apartment that won't allow "dangerous" dogs ie: German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Pitbulls and Dobermans. So I am looking at Giant Schnauzers and Bouviers! :D

I heard it on a program,..and as I said, I will do a little research on the dogs that I would own before I make that decision.

I think the study is about how people with convictions prefer to have dogs that are known for aggression as opposed to the other way around. It only reflects the choice people make in choosing the type of dog that's all.

Rottweilers, Pitt Bulls, and Dobermans can be trained to be vicious alot easier than say a poodle or a Cocker Spaniel.

You know I love you, right? :D

In my life, I have owned more then one rottweiler and more then one GSD. Oh, and a rather large male Akita.

Of all the dogs I have owned in the 20+ years since I have lived away from my parents - a cocker spaniel.

Yes - pit bulls are tenacious. It is a terrier trait. Rottweilers and Dobermans are large. Chain any dog up to a tree, feed it when the mood strikes you, and don't bother to do any socializing and it really doesn't matter what breed it is - it will become dangerous.

I am willing to bet that most criminals - drug dealing thugs who think that a large powerful dog will not only make them look good but will protect their "stuff" will choose whichever "killer" breed the press is going on about.

I want to say Whipple but I could be wrong.

If you remember right - the initial reports had the dogs as pit bulls and it wasn't until several days later that the breed was correctly identified.

Those particular Presa's had some major issues as far as how they were raised. But if you look at the breed standard - these are not a breed for the weak of heart, they are very anti-social and often times don't even bond to their "family".

The city that I live in has a pit-bull ban. Last year a young girl was killed (she was alone in the back yard with the dogs on chains) by a pair of malamutes.

Any breed can be unpredictable if they are not properly trained and socialized.

Please pay close attention to LD's last sentence....ANY DOG can be unpredictable if it's not carefully bred and raised.

There's no better dog anywhere than a mixed-breed female!

The study predisposes in its first sentence that all these dogs are vicious which is false.

Rotts do not eat their young as a rule.

Nor do Dobermans.

Nor does any other dog unless there is something wrong with the pup and even then that is a rare, rare instance.

When it seems like it is always little kids being bitten, one has to wonder first are the statitstics being reported accurately or are we just hearing that all the dogs eat babies? Second, what are the kids doing to provoke the attacks? Not saying it's the kid's fault every time but most time sit is and that cannot be blamed on the dog. Parents and adults are still stupid enough to leav etheir kid alone with a dog-of any size-and any breed-and yet when the kid pulls its tail and ears or pokes it in the eye or bites its nose, the dog is always blamed for the kid's actions. I have seen this happen and I always ask "what did the kid do?" Kids are not blameless little cherubs as many adults like to think.

This study sounds bogus and trumped-up to me.

The way a dog is treated has alot to do with it!! Just like people...not all, but we can become bitter and full of anger if mis-treated! Yes, I know we are a different species...but still Dogs that are given love...give it right back to the owners!!

My daughter works in a pet shop (they don't sell dogs)and in the last three months has had more young guys come into the shop asking where they could buy Rotts . Now this was only beacause back in September we had rather nasty incident where a child was killed by two Rotts . Right after this happened the papers were reporting that Rotts had the strongest bite power ...so hence young idiots coming into the shop wanting to trade in their Staff for Rott.:(
