I think I read that there are more suicides at Christmas time than any other part of the year.

I am curious about the sign on the left side of your page stating that turnips stole your mower? I do plant turnips sometimes for an Augst crop. Didnt do it this year. You can just till up your spring garden when its done and broadcast the turnip seeds. You can leave them in the ground all Winter if you like.

Turnip is just one of those great fun words :D

I love turnips. When I was a boy I would pull them out of the ground in the Fall when the ground was very cold and just peel them with my pocket knife and eat them right then. I do like them cooked too. Not really crazy about eating cooked turnip greens.

I know almost nothing about cricket. I think I have heard the term casting. Same as pitching here in a ball game I guess. What do you call batting? I mean swinging the club or paddle at the ball?

Cricket, I just don't get it. The lads I worked with in Essex let me play with them one day and I got confused after about 4 minutes, I think its genetic, and us Celts just didn't get the cricket gene. I get confused between overs, runs, wickets, follow ons, LBWs, well the whole thing really. It seems civilized though, I admit that, our Irish games just involve general but loosely organized mayhem and we use our sticks to hit each other and not the ball in general, though you are supposed to make an effort at that as well. They are fun though.

Our Irish Engineer in Ireland was a huge cricket fan and supported the Poms during the last Ashes Series.

And yes Hurling is legalised hooliganism :wah:

Yes it is a bit surprising that the Aussies love Cricket so much, as they also love punch ups a lot and that tends to be frowned on at the oval, of course they are very good at it, like any sport they take up (the annoying buggers), though it was nice to see them getting a good beating off our lads in the Rugby last week. As for the Hurling, Arnold my friend I hope I get a chance one day to take you to see Kilkenny play Cork in the All Ireland in Croke Park, its a tough game alright, but honestly the skill and speed of those fellas is unbelieveable, imagine trying to run along keeping a cricket ball balanced on your bat for thirty yards at full pelt while some other feicker is trying to knock your head off, then passing that little ball with your stick to another fella 50 yards away, who catches it while running at full speed, under pressure he throws it up on his hurl and smashes it into the net, I am in awe of those lads, its a game you have to start playing when you are about 4 if you are ever gonna be any good at it.

ArnoldLayne;469482 wrote: I guess in simple terms cricket has similarities with baseball. It involves a batsman/hitter trying to hit a hard ball, bowled/pitched by a bowler/pitcher.

The game itself, while looking dull at a glance by the casual onlooker, is very technical and the "long game" which is called a Test Match will last up to 5 days. Often 5 matches in a series. The short game is limited to 50 overs per side (6 balls in an over)

Australia is the best cricket nation for the most part (he says with gritted teeth)

I cant do any justice to the game in a few lines, I'm sorry

Thanks. I know a little now at least. Do you have Rugby there as they do in Australia? That looks like a tough game.

So hurling is a bit like cricket for the really angry (and ugly judging by the bloke in the guinness advert :wah: )

Yes its impressive alright, I think that fela in the ad just had drink problems. Actually my dad really liked cricket, specially on the radio, he lived in England from the age of 17 so he had enough time to get it. Thanks for the explantion you gave to oakie, I think I might understand a bit more now, no, wait I'm confused again, never mind, its probably just cause I'm an Aston Villa fan.
