SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Several California cities and counties, including San Francisco and Los Angeles, sued Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) on Friday, accusing the software giant of illegally charging inflated prices for its products because of monopoly control of the personal computer operating system market.
sigh. you know, i hate microsoft as much as the next guy, but nobody is being forced to buy microsoft products. if the price is too high, well then, don't buy it. yes, many arguments can be made that much of modern commerce relies upon microsoft products, but if that's the case, then maybe the govt should nationalize the company and take it over!
of course, i don't really think that. i think that cities and counties and states and nations shoudl find other ways to raise revenues. it's just like going after the tobacco companies. go after deep pockets so they can be picked.

I don't know about the states but in the UK it is impossible to buy an off the shelf computer without microsoft installed on it. As a matter of principle I am inclined not to buy windows XP as I resent having to register on line. The implication is that I have an illegal copy. My wife has a laptop with XP installed, what is startling is the number of times the firewall stops XP contacting the internet. Were it not for the firewall you would be unaware it is happening.
A number of programmes I use for work only work in windows, similarly a lot of the sites I use anly work properly with windows. So to say I have a choice in buying microsoft or not misses the reality of the situation.
