Ah Gorgeous George. Who's the most loved politician then?
Politicians are not treated with much respect in the UK. It did seem the senators were in a state of shock as if they are not used to political debate of such a robust nature.
You have a bizarre picture of British politics if you think that red ken strikes fear in anybody. Red Ken captured nothing he was voted in. The days when we touched our forelocks to the ruling classes are long gone and the language of revolutionary socialism brings a smile of nostalgia rather than fear to most people. Even at the height of it's popularity most people saw straight through to the basic flaw of it.
Many people in foreign countries have a love hate relationship with politicians. Here it is more complete indifference / hate. Politicians are like cess pits-you have to have them but love is not a word that applies. Or like toilet paper, use carefully because if they let you down it is usually very unpleasant.
This is old news. Was it not shown on american TV or something? He was under no obligation to appear before the senate commitee in the first place. I was hoping he would be put on trial in the states but they can't actually prove the allegation in a court of law. at the very least it would be highly entertaining. He successfully sued a british newspaper for slander over exactly the same allegation.
Be interesting to see if he keeps his seat at the next election after appearing in cat suits dancing with transvestites on game shows as that might have upset his more conservative muslim voters.
He's brilliant in debate which is why he frightens most politicians.

You have a bizarre picture of British politics if you think that red ken strikes fear in anybody. Red Ken captured nothing he was voted in.It's my wretched syntax letting me down again. In terms of the capture of the GLC, "the day after the election, Livingstone challenged McIntosh for the leadership [of the GLC Labour representation], and defeated him by 30 votes to 20". In terms of "Who's the most loved politician", I'd tried to indicate Ken as number two, with Gorgeous George way out at the front of the pack. All the mud-slinging in the world, alleging he profited from oil deals in Iraq, are sheer fantasy unless he's charged and convicted. If the evidence exists, a court is where it should be evaluated. As things stand he's the archetypal unsullied folk hero, and long may it continue that way.

Like all heroes he is hardly perfect. I reckon the British people are too cynical to have a politician as a hero they follow blindly. Winston Churchill got booted out after ww2 because people wanted change and they remembered his flaws as much as they admired his good points.
Same with Georgeous George, you can admire him in some ways but have the sense to be wary of him in others. He was involved in scottish politics before he went to bethnal green, "gorgeous" george is not meant as a compliment believe me.
(How do you tell the difference between a tory councillor and a labour one?
The tories are all in jail as the labour ones are better crooks and don't get caught so easily.)
Like you I enjoy seeing him an action and long may he continue but I think you kid yourself if you think he is some fine upstanding bringer of truth and justice.

And I'm delighted to note that as of today, Gorgeous George is back in the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament.Respect Party candidate George Galloway has taken the Bradford West parliamentary seat from Labour, winning the by-election by 10,100 votes.
Mr Galloway, expelled by Labour in 2003, said it was the "most sensational victory" in by-election history. He received 18,341 votes - a 56% share. Labour's deputy leader Harriet Harman said the results were "disappointing". At the 2010 General Election, Labour's Marsha Singh, who resigned on health grounds, won with a majority of 5,763 .
[...] Mr Galloway urged his former party to turn away "decisively" from the course set by former Prime Minister Tony Blair. He said Labour "must stop imagining that working people and poor people have no option but to support them if they hate the Tory and Liberal Democrat coalition partners. They have to stop supporting illegal, bloody, costly foreign wars because one of the reasons why they were so decisively defeated this evening is that the public don't believe that they have atoned for their role in the invasion and occupation of other people's countries and the drowning of those countries in blood."
The Respect politician was mobbed by supporters as he left the count.

And it's forty years since an Independent candidate last won a Parliamentary by-election in Britain.
Respect, Mr Galloway. Keep saying to people what needs saying.

The next election will be interesting, the lib dems are finished I think - speaking as someone who has always voted liberal I will not be doing so again. I think the coalition has killed them, not so much the coalition per se but the way their principles went right out the window and clegg should have made PR a condition of his forming a coalition with either of the parties. He blew the chance. Labour might take a hiding in scotland at the next westminster election in which case the whole country is f----d if the tories win a majority. I still hate thatcher.

I have a grudging admiration for the man.
He does say things that I believe in, but he is a egotistic sensationalist, who has a credibility gap.
Why has his election 'triumphs' been in ethnic areas ?

The constituency he held in Glasgow couldnot by any stretch of the imagination be classed as an ethnic area. He got booted out of the labour party in 2003 for being too left wing and opposing the war in Iraq. Perhaps it's as simple as he appealed to those of a left wing disposition who are pissed off with both labour and tory parties that are increasingly hard to tell apart and are bringing in a fascist state by the back door. I am ambivalent about him but I would suggest he is no more crooked than the MP's fiddling their expenses or who grovelled to murdochcorp.

He has only come to my attention since his since he gained notoriety with his outspoken opinions concerning the middle east.
Since then his elections have all been won in ethnic areas, as if he has used that notoriety as a stepping stone.

He's a brilliant orator that parliament could do well with having. The thing is how much of the dislike he engenders is due to what he is saying and how much is due to the spin put on it by a hostile press.
from wikipedia
Labour Party organiser
Galloway joined the Labour Party at 13 years old and, within five years, was secretary of the Dundee West constituency party. His enthusiasm led him to become Vice-Chairman of the Labour Party in the City of Dundee and a member of the Scottish Executive Committee in 1975. On 5 May 1977, he contested his first election campaign in the Scottish district elections, but failed to hold the safe Labour seat at Gillburn, Dundee. He was defeated by the Independent candidate Bunty Turley, who was a trade unionist running on the campaign slogan "Enough is enough" after allegations were made about Galloway's personal and financial behaviour.[14] Galloway became the secretary organiser of Dundee Labour Party—the youngest ever Scottish chairman—in March 1981 at 26 years old.[15]
I was actually working in Dundee at the time. there had been a kind of misogynistic labour mafia running Scottish local politics - you had to play the game to get in as it were. I knew some of the allegations against him but nothing was ever proved. On the other hand plenty of MP's see nothing wrong with taking advantage of the system for their own benefit (see Tony Blair millionaire ex prime minister) so is he really any different, or worse?

When you read his words from the page, without his attitude and cocky delivery to sway your perception of the man, he talks a lot of sense.
