I have no problem with that being your opinion.
I happen to hold the opposite view but in both cases we should be working towards the betterment of mankind regardless of our opinion.

Why?
What are some potential explanations? What are some proposed solutions?
Religion is an idea/guide to how followers of said religion should live their lives. Like all ideas, religion is open to corruption. it can be manipulated to fit the agenda of whoever has the means.

The poolhall's a great equalizer. In the poolhall, nobody cares how old you are, how young you are, what color your skin is or how much money you've got in your pocket... It's about how you move. I remember this kid once who could move around a pool table like nobody had ever seen. Hour after hour, rack after rack, his shots just went in. The cue was part of his arm and the balls had eyes. And the thing that made him so good was... He thought he could never miss. I know, 'cause that kid was me.

What's wrong with religion?
I had a nasty bigoted boyfriend but he didn't turn me off men forever.
Religion has it's bad boys and its gentlemen.

All religions have their problems. It is not just a monopoly held by Christian religion. Unfortunately its not just the religious that have a monopoly on bigotry and what ever else one wants to throw at the human being.
Is there bigotry in the Christian religion? Sure since all are humans. Has the Christian religion done harm to many? Absolutely. We could ask these questions of any human organization anywhere in the world and the answers would be the same.
On the other hand do the basic tenets of Christianity propose or oppose those negatives? In other words one shouldn't blame all of Christianity for those ills. We should be going after those who promote such things within the Christian faith. It is a complete perversion of all that Jesus taught and lived. It seems to me that The Christians themselves must learn to go after those who misuse not only their own faith but those of others.
As for "believe in yourself", I think Jesus would completely agree.
To the statement "there is no need for it" one could look at the statement in light of it context and respond with an "Of course not". No one needs bigotry or any of the other implied ills.
In the wider context millions down through the centuries have been helped and encouraged to face life with courage. There is a need for this. This is one thing that atheism is very weak on.
I could list millions of ways in which a religious faith, Christian or otherwise has been exceptionally helpful It would be all too easy for me to simply get up and walk out but I happen to trust in my religious faith and will fight to help it move in the right direction. I also realize that many don't think that way.and they are certainly entitled to their opinion.
If anyone wants to get into specifics I can do that to show just how important such a faith is.
Personally I don't mind such criticisms because they are often purely a lack of knowledge and understanding on the part of the critic.
I cannot comment on "It ******d up my childhood." I have no idea as to what the author intends.

Frankly, Ted, I doubt very much that people who have experienced the "down side" of religion really welcome attempts to defend it, and the fact that you "have no problem" with someone expressing a negative opinion just isn't relative.
JMHO, of course, but I didn't understand that this thread was about anything other than expressing our opinions as to "WHAT'S WRONG WITH RELIGION?"
If I'm interested in exploring religion, I'll find an "EXPLORE RELIGION" thread.

"Frankly Lulu2" you are quite entitled to your opinion. As for my comments here I was asked to give. If you have a problem with that than I can't help you. If you don't want to read about religion than you can always take a hike. I also note that the overall title of this particular set is "General Religious Discussion" Perhaps you made a right turn when you intended to go left.
As far as my defending religion goes, it does not need my defense. It is well able to defend itself.
If the topic had been "What is wrong with atheism" you would have in all likelihood been in there putting forward your own opinions.

the only thing i found wrong with religion is most of what i was taught about how to live and be when i was a child would work wonders if you were growing up in a healthy family. but to be good, humble and loving in a family from hell just made it worse. it was the equivelant of throwing a kitten in a lions den.

religion, in and of itself, is intrisically good. unfortunately, it's practitioners are not so good and well-meaniing. many use it to further their own ambitions, others to advance their own opinions as truth.
any study of religion, whichever one you are learning or exploring, will always follow three paths. first, to make you believe. second, to set your thinking in only one direction, and third, to control its followers so as to prevent outside ideas from entering its tenets and disrupting its functionality.
those who provide the instructional control often interpret small parts to make a point or re-inforce some point which has been taken out of context, becomes more important than it really is, and often completely changes the meaning of the entire context as a whole.
religion has been used, and is still being used to justify just about anything, including and not limited to all the negative, as well as positive, elememnts of social developement.
the best thing that could happen as far as religion goes is to stop using it altogether. it is, has been, and always will be nothing less than the most divisive element to social development. :-4 :-4
