My Foster Dog May Have a Home!

Post by RedGlitter »

I am all aflutter right now!!

A woman in my town just called me inquiring about one of my foster dogs, Ace, who is on Petfinder!

I haven't done much with my foster guys the last year as I was taking care of my mom and that was my priority but we're having hard times now and I need to get these guys out as soon as I can. I was planning to redo my site and get all my guys up and make that my new priority anyway, and then I just got this call!

She has a female 6 month old black Lab and she asked how Ace is in the house so that's a good sign. I know the area in which she lives and it's local so I can check on him at any time! :D

He is neutered but due for vaccs. Will get that done. My policy is to always bring the pet to the inquirer's house, so I can check them out, rather than have them come to my home. We made plans to bring Ace over October 30th. I have to get transpo arranged. (I don't drive.)

Bla bla bla, this is like a diary huh? :o

It's been over a year since we adopted anyone out. I know it's not a sure deal yet and I need to know more about the people and they him, but every time one of my guys has a chance, I get knots in my stomach! :o I am so afraid to let them go but I also want them to have a real home!

Ace was adopted from the tribal shelter along with an adult dog- they were pals. The adoptive woman couldn't handle Ace's chewing and puppyisms and gave him back. Then he fostered in two other homes before we brought him here to ours.

He appears to be part German Shepherd but that's all we can tell. I told the lady I would send recent photos of him so I will post one here for you guys.

Please wish us luck!!! I love my foster dogs so much!!! I have nine!!! :o

You're absolutely giddy, aren't you? That's great that you do so much good, Red. How many do you foster? What's your max capacity?

Thank you, Abbey! :)

Hi Accountable!

I have nine foster dogs right now. I foster out of my home. All the foster guys are outdoor dogs and have their own living quarters and play yards in my backyard. I also have four personal dogs of my own (3 live inside, the dalmation lives outside) and three of my own cats.

So I really don't have any actual capacity to speak of, just my yard.

My yard is about an acre and a half.

I never intended to foster this many dogs, but they were in danger of being killed. I get calls every day from people wanting to dump their pets on me but I have to refuse them. :(

And yes I was pretty giddy! :D I had to take a sleeping pill to chill out a little.

I got my sheltie from a collie/sheltie shelter. This guy had a really small yard for the number of dogs he had, but man were those dogs disciplined! He loved them to no end, but never let them get away with anything. I'd foster if I had the land.

I'm looking forward to seeing some photos and hearing more about your shelter.

Me too, Red. I think it's just marvelous. :-6

Good luck on the 30th! Of course you must let us know how it goes :)

Now where is that picture you promised us? ;)

Awww- thanks guys!!

Really, thank you! I appreciate your support because it's a tough job to do.

Accountable, I'd like to see your dog! :) I love seeing anyone's pet friends! Show me kids or grandkids and my eyes will glaze over but show me a pet and I'm there. :wah:

You know, you could foster just one animal at a time, Accountable, and it would be a major help. It's like the Starfish Story- you can't save them all but it makes a difference to the ones you can. But lots of people can't foster a pet for various reasons, so don't feel bad if you can't. There are a ton of other ways you can help them. :) Every effort you make matters!

Cher, I will be taking photos today or tomorrow so I'll put one up for you all then. I have to revamp my Petfidner site and then I will be able to show you all my guys.

Tracy died of some kind of heart condition a couple of years ago. She was only eight. I don't think I have any digital pics of her. Since then, I've gotten Shima, my low-maintenance dog. That's her sitting on my shoulder in my profile (she's a bit bigger now).

I'm so sorry, Accountable... I didn't know. :( It's always so hard to lose a furry companion. I'm very sorry.

Shima is a beautiful uh...low maintenance...dog. :D You're so funny!

no walking, no bathing, no brushing. Low maintenance! :yh_bigsmi

But she doesn't hide when visitors come over. She comes out and sniffs them just like a dog would. :D

Well....it looks like that woman who called about Ace flaked out on him.

I sent her an email and it bounced back. I called last night and left a message with both my phone numbers and asked her to call me back with the time that was most convenient for her to have me bring Ace by.

No answer so far.

I am used to this. Maybe it was the adoption fee, maybe it was that he was neutered and she wanted to breed, or her husband said no or maybe she wasn't that interested to start with. Who knows. I used to waste so much time on flakes like this, thinking if I didn't, then I would lose a home for my dog or cat. But then I got smart and realized that yes, my fosters are a burden sometimes but they're safe with me at least. If someone doesn't want one of my guys then I want to know upfront before I hand over one of my friends! I will not beg someone to take my animals. I mean, all we were doing was making an "introduction!" Nothing was sealed and she can't even call me back to tell me she's not interested? Nuh uh. Throw this one back!

She missed out on a great dog.

That's sad, and must be so bloody annoying! :(

Still, best that you find that she's fickle at this stage.

Well, it looks like I was mistaken.

The woman called me this morning while i was in the shower. She left a message saying she was on her way to work but that she'd call me tomorrow morning (err...that's actually now) and set up a time.

So...well see.... now I'm all aflutter again. :o

Hi!

We took Ace to his potential new home today for a two week trial run. The couple seemed like good people and dog friendly. Ace and their dog Brianna took to each other immediately. I made it clear that we want everyone to be happy, both dogs and people and if it didn't work out, we would take him right back! I never want my dogs to see the inside of a pound ever again!

So I will call them two days from now and see how it's going. I will be in touch. The deal isn't sealed yet but I have high hopes. :-4

:-1 It didn't work out.

They called me because they had a couple fights over food and treats. I wouldn't have fed them together so soon but i wasn't going to press the issue. It seems Ace was the dominant one. So he's back with me now. We will try again. I was just sick when I saw who it was that was calling me. I knew right away the deal was off. I'm just glad nobody was hurt.

It's true, Red.

The wonderful thing is that you *keep* trying.

Give Ace a big hug from his friends in the Garden :-4
