'Grey's Anatomy' star T.R. Knight says he's gay

NEW YORK (AP) — Grey's Anatomy star T.R. Knight says he's gay, but hopes people don't consider that "the most interesting part of me."

The 33-year-old actor addressed rumors of his sexuality in a statement to People magazine Thursday.

"I guess there have been a few questions about my sexuality, and I'd like to quiet any unnecessary rumors that may be out there," Knight's statement read. "While I prefer to keep my personal life private, I hope the fact that I'm gay isn't the most interesting part of me."

Knight plays Dr. George O'Malley on the popular ABC drama. A former stage actor, his television credits also include CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Knight's Grey's Anatomy character, a bumbling, puppy-eyed surgeon, has long been in love with Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo).

Good for him, finding the courage to be honest and honorable about his identity. I'm glad we live in times where it's possible, if not easy, to do this. And I long for the day when it just won't be important!

I agree, Lulu. The day will come where the news will not be shocking..or even be news.

Pinky, it is because so many people in this country still have sticks up thier butts about this kind of stuff. They do not like people being "in thier face" about thier sexuality.

Sad isn't it.:(

Er I think the ones with the stick up their butts would be the ones who would be rather happy about his gayness.

Our soldiers are brave, those firefighter's fighting the wildfires are brave, police officers are brave, an overpaid pampered actor saying he's gay is not brave. It's like inviting himself to the cotillion ball. He will be congratulated, back-slapped, and canonized. Where's the bravery in that? He's gay, good for him. Is this news that affects anyone? Hey, I'm nearsighted. Aren't I brave? ;)

He wasn't in anybody's face, apparently...he was trying to keep his private life private. Which is not to say secret - but who he chooses to sleep with shouldn't be of concern to anyone but him and who he chooses. The ones that were in his face were the ones that were doing the speculating, and it's none of their business.

Pulling that knife out of your eye should help.

:wah: Yes...removing that knife might improve your vision, too!

My understanding of the word "brave" is being afraid to do something and doing it anyway. Using that definition, we can all be brave, to one degree or another.

Adam, I'd be terrified to attempt your job. You must've been VERY brave, the first time you sat down alone and took a call!

Considering the impact this revelation might have on his personal life and career, I'd agree he's brave to be candid. Why shouldn't he?

Because he's in the liberal bastion of Hollywood, not in bumpkin Alabama. P.S. I'm not brave. :)

You mean it'd take more bravery to be honest about the rumours related to his sexual orientation in Bumpkiss, Alabama than in Hollywood? I don't know about that one, Adam....but I do think you're brave to take responsibility for the proper handling of life and death emergencies!

(I've been an "O" operator and know how scary it is to take a call and have someone screaming that they've been stabbed and they're bleeding to death! Anyone willing to do that on a daily basis is brave.)

I guess this isn't relative (no pun intended) but it just came to mind. A couple of weeks ago I went to a family reunion on my dad's side. I'm practically a moderate in my family; I come from a stock of southern conservatives. My cousin Johnny brought his boyfriend to the reunion. Now I don't ever remember there being an official "outing" with Johnny but it's just something we always knew. Johnny and his friend were treated with the utmost respect and kindness during the reunion. Don't know what this has to do with anything, just that being gay doesn't really require a lot of fortitude - no more so than "being" anything else these days. I would say it is harder to have a bi-racial child than come out of the closet. I'm not bashing the actor, I could care less who he dates. I just don't find it brave, that's all.

Would Johnny have the courage to be "outed" in front of the entire country? THAT is what takes bravery. JMHO.

Just curious....if YOU are "moderate" in your family and THEY are "conservative," how do they really feel about Johnny?

If he was publicly outed then whoever did it should be ashamed. I'm a private kind of guy so I totally understand that maybe this actor wanted his personal life to remain private. But if he was outed then he had no choice so it took no bravery on his part. But he can remain dignified under trying circumstances that are beyond his control and he seems to be doing that.

Just curious....if YOU are "moderate" in your family and THEY are "conservative," how do they really feel about Johnny?

Johnny is family. I love him and want nothing but the best for him. I disagree with his lifestyle but it's his life to live. I don't have to morally condone any of his choices in order to love him and care for him and he doesn't have to morally condone any of my choices in order to love me. Does that answer your question or were you looking for something else?

Of course not...I'm curious as to how they reconcile their religious objections to his sexual orientation (not "lifestyle," please.)

(Adam, take that knife out of your eye....it's making you TESTY!)

I will admit to being testy lately. :-6 Not sure I understand what you are getting at. Are you wondering how we can accept him yet not approve of his sexual orientation? I don't know, to me that seems obvious. The stereotypes of homophobic, judgemental Christians doesn't apply in most cases; it's just that -a stereotype. Jesus loves me in spite of all my faults and He loves Johnny in spite of all of his(not specifically referring to homosexuality, just being a fallible human being). If he is good enough for Jesus he is good enough for me. And Johnny can look past my faults and say the same thing. Is that too jingoistic? I'm a little tired and, as you pointed out, agitated so I don't think I'm really expressing myself well. I'm kinda just throwing stuff out there. IF I'm still not answering your question keep trying to get through the fog, I'll eventually become more lucent (I hope).

(How can you "see" the point with a knife in your eye and a scream coming out your mouth?)
