The US Navy prefers not take any chances with "wee" boats like the one that exploded along side the USS Cole.

While I am sure that capt of the ferry was scared, the world must understand that it is due to a history of our giving "the benefit of the doubt" to others, that the USS Cole was crippled & had men killed ...all by a speed boat, much smaller than the ferry!

I'm well aware of the cole incident. So are most people.
It's good to see americans retain a sense of humour. The incident was and is seen as funny and people understand the concern, no one has taken offence. British warships operate on the clyde all the time and faslane is where the nuclear weapons are stored.
If you can't see the humour in the situation then the US is in a bigger mess than I thought.
The alternative headline is something like "gun happy hysterical americans threaten to sink scots ferry".

I find nothing at all humorous about it, but then again I've seen the face of war and death..I doubt the dead sailors from the USS Cole would see much humor in it either..

Zinky, my father was killed in military service and nobody has better reason than I to feel horrified by the potential for another disaster.
Having said that....this could've been a scene from a comedy! Little ferry sets out on a bright sunny day ("on a three-hour cruise") and suddenly finds itself in the path of AN ENORMOUS BATTLE SHIP! All ends well, after a few scary moments....they shake hands and everyone's happy in the end.
Come on....
giggle....
giggle or I'll tickle you!

You KNOW the ferry captain did just that! I'll bet there was a HUGE blare of a warning horn!
Come on...let's cast a film! Jim Carrey for the ferry captain? Denzel Washington as the commander of the ship? Maybe a few lovely young women for set-dressing?

Oh yes...gmc..I can see the humor in it. I just worry that other people will use the incident to further the anti-american sentiments brewing around the globe.
I am not a "world traveler".... I have been all around the US, but I have only been 5 miles into Mexico (across the New Mexico border) and I went to Montreal in 1995. Several folks, mostly men, made it clear that they didn't like Americans.
I wasn't too worried about that because I'd have beat him to a pulp with my cue-stick :wah: but I count myself as a Texian (one who is a member of the Republic of Texas independence movement)....so what does that make me... a Texian-American???
Anyway....thanks for the good points.

The reason, gmc and I find this hilarious is because we know the area like the back of our hand.
Faslane, itself is harmed to the teeth....the docking area, underground, overground, and RAF fighter jets can be there in minutes.
The area where this happened was, Scottish coastal waters, visible to people inland. There should have been a local shipping pilot aboard the US ship .....jeez even a local harbour master could have averted this nonsense by the use of their local knowledge....point of fact, a local school kid would know the local inland coastal shipping boats.

I think it is sorta like when you do something and it is stupid or lame or just weird...and you laugh at yourself. (I crack myself up all the time at the dumb things I do! Glad there isn't anyone else around to see it.:-6 )
It should have been common knowledge that due to the location of the US ship, it stands to reason that local traffic will be in the area.
It also stands to reason that the little ferry could see the big ship.
I don't know if this is coming out right...but just the ferry guy getting the poop scared out of him...is funny 'cause he'll be in the pubs...telling the tale...and folks will be buying him drinks to keep him there to tell it again...
(Am I getting it right Clancy & gmc???)

Well I do all kinds of lame things to..but security of a warship in this day and time are not lame. The UK is not immune to terroists attacks as recent history in London have shown. Why would it be so hard to hijack a ferry or fill a small boat with explosives in Scotland and ram a warship? I am serious in this question and not meaning to offend anyone.

That isnt to say that we take terrorism lightly. Our long experience tells us differently.
I do however find this amusing, given as Clancy said, the location. Its more secure than a Scotsmans wallet around those parts

It's a bit like trying to explain why monty python is funny to someone that doesn't get it.
That area is one of the busiest military areas in the UK there are warships going up and down all the time. It is also where the nuclear submarines are based. Usually they put to sea accompanied by a flotilla of small boats with anti nuclear protesters.
The Royal Navy don't **** about and other boats get out their way but they ask them to move politely. There are hundreds of small boats, ferries and other vessels around as well. They know to keep a wide berth of the naval ships and the royal navy captains use their common sense if an inexperienced yachtsman gets too close and they know the ferry times so that if one shows up where it shouldn't that something is wrong.
Just along the coast is Glasgow, one of the most densely populated parts of europe never mind the UK.
We don't take kindly to our own navy throwing their weight around so it's a bit hard to take americans seriously.
It's funny because most people realise the first instinct of the ferry captain was probably to tell the American captain to F(*&*k off and not be so silly. It's not viewed as an american throwing his weight around rather than a lapse in protocol for whatever reason. It was up to the captain of the naval ship to know there would be a ferry around. You either laugh at it and take steps to stop it happening again or blow it out of all proportion.
How you can twist the report in to being anti american escapes me. I would imagine the captain of the naval ship is going to get his leg pulled for months to come. Certainly any royal navy captain he meets -especially if they're scots, will find it hard not to take the ****.

The Royal Navy take the security of warships very seriously, I've seen it enough myself when I lived in Plymouth. Armed MOD Police launches sail ahead and astern of all Warships, entering or leaving port, with fast rigid inflatable boats out on the wings, to intercept any vessel that comes within a certain distance. They don't mess around, nothing would have got near the US ship! Having seen these people at work, and I'm sure the ones at Faslane are equally dilligent, is the reason I found this story amusing.
