I can touch type on a regular keyboard. But it is harder on my laptop. They keyboard is smaller and my fingers are too big. I find that if I am not paying attention, I hit the caps lock every time I mean to go for the shift key. I have never timed myself to see what my wpm is.

I touch type too, and it blows my kids away at how fast I can go without looking.

Learned on the dinotypewriter, yep those dinosaur manual type writers, I went to business college .... back in the day and prior to that I had typing as a class in high school, no idea my "rpm's" hehehe but I guess I am fast enough....

oh yeah lap tops forget it I am awful with that teeeny keyboard.

Showing my age here as well.

I touch type and learned on an old Smith Corona manual back in my college days ... I still have that old dinosaur too! :wah:

I don't have much problems working with my laptop ... it just takes a little getting used to, though I really prefer the ergonomic keyboard on my desktop.

Hi Helefra,

And thanks for the memories :) I learned at school on a manual, hated electric typewriters it seemed you rested your finger on the key and thing started typing.

When I started on computers it took me a little while to get used to the proper use of the return key as well.

First year typing class was on a manual Underwood with no letters on the keys. If you wanted to know which key to hit, you had to look at the chart on the wall. I've since tried to take piano, but I can't force myself to take my eyes off the music, and my fingers refuse to hit more than one at a time. :p

Second year class was on IBM selectrics. My top speed was 82 wpm! I still remember that day. We were using dictaphone tape recorders that we operated with a foot switch. I finished, sweating, arms cramping ... and that bitch next to me with the "I donated blood today!" sticker on her blouse was sitting there buffing her nails! She typed over 120!

I can still type 60 wpm. Tested at the employment agency a few months ago.

Oh, dear me!

Of course I remember the old manual typewriter.. as well as I remember my fingers between a type and another, my broken nails and .... mountains and mountains of sheets thrown away, because of a small, stupid error, which you realized to have done just at the end...AAAhrg!

To my fortune, my second job was in an american computer company, so I could forget the typwriter - have one only in office, for particular documents -

Ah! relax! One, ten, millions of typing mistakes completely forgotten.

Documents ended in few minutes, perfect.

Wonderful. I believe that this is one of the best ideas in these years.

And, by the way, who recall the telex machine and the telecopier ?

I learnt to touch type in sixth form at school. We had two electric typewriters that I only used a couple of times, they were hogged by two girls in the class, the rest of us used manual typewriters. I was they only girl in the class who could keep my first fingers on the 'home' keys whilst stretching my little fingers to the shift keys - long fingers (like bunches of bananas my mum said!). Can still do it at a push but my speed is not good now.

Does anyone remember Gestetner (I think) copiers? You had to put a plasticy sheet in your typewriter and if you made a mistake you were stuffed and had to start again.

My first job was in a bank and we used adding machines a lot - I can still use one without looking at the keys and am a bit of a whizz at adding up a column of numbers on one!!:)

The telex machine, i'll try to explain.

It was a sort of progenitor of the fax machine, with a substancial difference:

you should type the document you have to transmit.

It was composed of a typing machine: while you are typing, there is a small paper ribbon getting out from the machine. This ribbon has a lot af small holes, which correspond to each typed word.

To transmit the document, you should insert this ribbon in the appropriate site, then dial the telex number and - cross your finger - let the machine start to trasmission.

Sometimes it happened that - after a long laborious document to be transmitted, the ribbon broke during transmission so, you should re-type again, and again... oh, povera me!

Yes, the young ones of today have it easy. For those of you who may have worked in a solicitor's office where you were dealing with conveyancing matters (buying/selling of property/land) I was told of a time, before machines got to the point of being able to photocopy in colour, etc that all plans were copied by using a type of tracing paper over the plan and drawing it with a pen. If you made a mistake, you would have to scrap the paper and start again. :-5 Don't think I would have liked that one.

All I can say is, thank god that technology has improved over the years making our lives much easier and yet we still find something to complain about. If it's not the photocopier breaking down on us, then it will be the computers crashing.

as i said earlier she is a touchy typer person :wah:
