The man was obviously detained so as not to create anymore disturbance.

I personally wouldn't mind sacrificing a little time to make America(or any other country) safer.

If you can take over a commercial airliner with something the size of a tube of toothpaste, security needs to be tight....after all, were not dealing with probability anymore, were dealing with insanity.

Hmm, makes me wonder what the internet forum is talking about. BWI airport had a loaded gun a few days ago in the suitcase, that was much more serious. I don't think they caught that person either.

I was leaning the other way with the story... I think the security people harrassed the guy.

Well considering that the 9/11 hijackers had taken over a commercial airliner with a box cutter relatively the same size as a tube of toothpaste, I myself can understand strict policy.

As far as him being harassed, wasn't he the one harassing TSA in his protesting?

Honestly why would anyone have a problem with an effort to make an entire country safer? Are parents sometimes overprotective of their children? Sure. Your kids might not like it, but your looking after their best interests.

I bet this guy would have been sorely disappointed if they'd ignored the comment on the bag and just let him through and stopped someone behind him. His statement is that the supervisor was angry. There are no other statements to back this up. Seems to me that he was purposely trying to provoke a reaction.

And look what the TSA handed him on a plate - worldwide publicity for his point of view. You couldn't buy coverage like this. Perhaps some enterprising company will now market "Kip Hawley is an Idiot" plastic bags and there'll be thousands of them on planes in future.

Who would be hurt by merely policing intelligence-led security threats instead of inconveniencing the public routinely? Obviously scanning is a good idea but it can surely be more passive and unintrusive than this.

The restrictions aren't geared to make you safer. It's made to make you feel safer.

It's like Victory Gardens of WWII. They didn't really help anything, but it made people feel like they were helping.

Right.

So using those restrictions to further your censorship ideals is questionable ethically.

I agree with you all the way... his baggage, from what was written, conformed

to requirements - some over-zealous jobsworth osser objected to *words*

written on it, and caused all this trouble! I am astounded. Those responsible

should be sacked.

Well, it's quite a big thing IMO for someone to be detained for being in the

posession of a bag with the words "Kip Hawley is an Idiot" written on it.

I would certainly not expect to be detained for having a bag about my person

with "Tony Blair is an idiot", or "The Home Secretary, whoever he is this week,

is an idiot" written on it.

Doesn't take much, then, does it!! Someone clearly exceeded their authority.

"he was detained at an airport security checkpoint for about 25 minutes before authorities concluded the statement was not a threat"

Wow! Hilarious. Who the hell's this "Kip Hawley", anyway?
