Hewlett packard or fujitsu

I need a new desktop and have narrowed the choice down to HP ir Fujitsu Seimens.

Anybody any experience with either manufacturer.

Run from HP! Fast and far.

HP likes to integrate as much circuitry as possible. Lowers the price, but also makes upgrades all but impossible.

I have no experience with Fujitsu desktops, but my beloved's Fujitsu laptop is great.

I'm not really a computer expert, but I do believe that you are best going for a Fujitsu as AC says, as HP's can be a right pain in the ass at times.

I've used both and they've called it right. HP is very proprietary (they absorbed Compaq and I swore years ago never to lay myself at their mercy again, they have such a policy of locking customers into their own cabling and consequently, often, components). HP did much the same thing when they bought Novell and locked their hardware to possession of a Netware licenced server, the dogs. It's not accidental, it's a long-term corporate policy in my view.

Having said which, why are you set on having a desktop instead of a laptop? There's good reasons, I'm just interested in what yours are.

I work in IT field and would advise you to avoid HP as Spot has said. They have known to do something called "tatooing" in the computer BIOS. This basically records an image of orginal hardware and refuses to let you swap out a component without taking the system to an "authorized dealer" to have the BIOS re-tatooed. It can be expensive. If you looking for a bargain you may want to review eMachines T3990.

I'm on my second Hewlett Packard PC. The first one was excellent but old and is still going, being used by an 'occasional user'.

We use Dell at work...straight from the manufacturer.

I've no experience with the others...sorry...

I have a toshiba satellite pro that i use sometimes with clients but for everyday use I hate them. In particular the screen. Since I use computers a lot and am already short sighted the quality of the monitor screen matters a great deal to me. I splashed out on a neovo monitor with an optical screen which has cut down on the eye strain quite considerably. Peering at laptop screens bugs me out of all proportion-although they are getting pretty good now.

I have a paperless office and am finding the desktop I have cannot cope with the demands of multi page scanning-or rather it can but it takes about ten minutes to scan and convert a twenty page document to PDF. In the meantime I cannot do anything else with the computer or it just freezes and i end up re-booting. I can't upgrade without buying a new motherboard and processor and by the time I tot up all the parts I need I am as well just going for a new one altogether. While it is for businss use it's a bit more than doing the odd letters or spreadsheet. I want one that can handle several things at once without sulking on me.

Both the ones I have been looking at have dualcore processors. I was going to get one built but by the time you tot it all up there is no cost advantage add dual core in as well and the cost rises too much. I would do it myself but this is not to play with but for business so I'm as well biting the bullet and get the best I can afford.

The only thing HP is good for is PRINTERS and that is going down hill as well.

I have 6 laptop and 75 desktops I'm in charge of at work. I have been fooling around with PC's since 1972 and I can say to get the best bang for the buck go DELL. I have gotten ride of every other kinda of desktop at the office they are just crap, and replaces them with DELL'S.

You put a DELL on the floor and forget about it they are that dependable.

Whats nice about DELL is you get a lot of PC for you $$$ and you ususally get Flat Panel Monitor free. I have just installed another 12 DELL Deminsions 5150 Dual Core, a Gig of Ram and huge hard drives all came with free 17inch flat monitors. They are fast and quite, takes the worry out of my day. I have about 5 other brands left on the floor that are going as soon as I get the OK and will buy DELLS.. Oh each one cost us $980.00 each well worth it. When I'm done the entire floor will have DELL's and I can sit back and play games or come to FG and post..

I also have changed all our LAPTOP's to DELL'S as well, granted they are a SONY OR THINKPAD but they are just as good and durable we have 6 that float in and out of the office for training and travel .. Never a day with a problem and one is at least 6 or 7 years old and going strong..

JUST MY OPINION OF COURSE..

Thanks for that, HP are off my list. Dell kind of put me if-I like to see what i am buying, I don't need the monitor and I find them pretty expensive even so by the ime you add in VAT and delivery. Apart from that the sales people are out in India or somewhere, nothing wrong with that except they have real difficulty understanding scottish accents and communicating with them is a bit difficult to put it mildly.

The alternative is get one built for me, works out much the same and I don't get a lot of software I don't want anyway

Getting one built to your spec is a good way to go as well. I like DELL support online for the reason you mention. I never physically talk to anyone anymore I use live online chat, that way the words are understandable on both ends and it works well in my environment.

They have great service but I'm in the business environment of it so BULK delivery is how I order. I have had to send back a printer or 2, they send the box for you to ship and off it goes, I have the replacement in the office the next day.

I have Dell's installed in all my families homes as well. My Nieces ueses her Dell Laptop at Stanford not one problem so far and she is a Senior.

If your going to build your own don't cheap out you will be sorry in the long run, you get what you pay for in building PC's good luck.

Your first sentence had me confused for a minute or two. I was trying to imagine what kind of scots accent a californian would have and how it would go over in India.

Your right GMC I didn't explain it very well sorry.

What I was trying to convey is that on line using a keyboard, not speaking on the phone, no accents to worry about just reading the words on both ends.

I went for the fujitsu siemens. Took it out the box, read the manual, plugged it in and nothing. It was duff. Took it back got another and it works great. Dual core processor, 2gb of ram compared to my old one it's like getting a ferrari after a CV6.

Thanks for your help I took your advice and binned HP.
