In another case of "political correctness" gone crazy, the German Opera in Berlin announced its decision not to revive a production of Mozart's "Idomeneo" "out of fear of inciting Islamic extremists over a scene showing the severed head of the prophet Mohammad."
It's not a popular work, but it's an interesting one, in which Mozart wanted to show the dangers in organized religion....ALL organized religion, not just Islam.
My, my, my....first cartoons, then short films, now an opera.

Of course, it's absurd! And the legions of the "politically correct" had best consider carefully what they're doing.
Bending over for this kind of nonsense will undoubtedly BRING DOWN THE CURTAIN on free speech, artistic expression and controversy of any kind.
(Other than that of the rotten Americans who want to invade all the Muslim countries in the world and spread their materialistic ideas and ruin the health of the world's children and make everyone as bad as THEY are! That'll always be politically correct.)

Unfortunately Lu, it seems over the past several years "Free Speech" to the general masses, has already become a thing of the past, Worldwide! Many, if not all, major speakers undoubtedly read & re-read their prepaired speeches to assure PC guidlines have been met! This is evident as when sometimes these same people are caught off guard, and they do not have a prepared speech in front of them, and say the first thing that really is on their mind that is not so PC, an walla, PC uprisings! We ourselves (mostly all, I believe) here in our garden seemingly try to be PC for the most part. I know I try to be, out of respect for our FG family. I read & re-read my posts for it's content, so as to try to avoid any misinterpretations & or misunderstands of my initial intent.

Yes, well....one can try not to offend but the burden goes two ways. Why should it be acceptable to refer to Christians as "pigs," etc, and throw a hissy fit about a very old opera which implies that ALL organized religion is dangerous?

Gave a short speech in Parliament.
The speech he gave to the House Of Commons (The British Parliament ) on the eve of the second reading of the serious organised crime and Police Bill (proposal) to publicise the objections of a broad group of writers, representatives of the National Secular Society and MP's (members of parliament)

This is just my own opinion
The people that we have at present running our country (U.K.) would have liked us to have fallen under the nanny spell of compliance. The politically correct, morons, would have liked us to bow to the religious fanatics. Our then U.K. Home Secretary David Blunkett had plans for tackling organised crime, included, (and I quote) provisions to create a new offence of incitement to religious hatred to protect faith groups, particularly Muslims, from attack.
Allow me to repeat that part "a new offence of incitement to religious hatred to protect faith groups" This is where we all said, P1SS-Off !! By that politically correct rationale, it would have meant my dvd movie of, The Life Of Brian would have come under such a heading, and by rights, censorship could/may have applied, and anyway, I wasn't for hiding my dvd under the sofa for anyone, had any of this bullshit came about. Moving swiftly onto the events that happened recently.....where the supreme Pontiff of Rome (the pope) made an apology for a particular reference in an address he made, I think he made an error, and I don't think his error was his choice of historical topic, I think his error came in the form of an apology.....and let me just state, I'm not catholic.
Part reason I made that post about a bible with half of it missing was intended to poke fun at ALL religious zealots, and fanatics. These lunatics on whatever side of the divide they sit on, are fast becoming a blight to everything we take as our right, and that is to speak freely. These lunatics are no more religious than the plastic keyboard I'm typing on, all they have done is hang their hatred onto the coat tails of a religion and make a mockery of it for every other law abiding citizen who has a faith, and it's the latter who need to speak up now, and by that I mean the Muslim faith who I hear very little from.
This thread was started with the news that the German Opera in Berlin announced it's decision not to revive a production of, Mozart. Does this mean we'll have to pull, productions of, Alladin at Christmas time for the kids because the actors on stage will be dressed as moors wearing turbans, and saying, "sim sim sala bim "??? If that were the case, Arnold could turn around and declare that being a Londoner, he doesn't want to see, rhyming slang or, I could declare the Scots a minority, and that any mention of the kilt will be complained about. It's that level of sheer stupidity that annoys me.
Now, I can fully understand the need for care in what our political leaders have to do in their speeches, and that we have to safeguard those that will come under the hammer, but we seem to be appeasing these lunatics who are hell bent on creating havoc in the name of Allah.
Lulu (the thread starter) will be on vacation in a Muslim country, and she will abide by their rules and standards while she is a visitor, yet the lunatic fringe would have her be like that in her own country , the U.S. ....and the lunatic fringe expect everyone to comply with their extremist views here in the U.K ...and all over Europe it's complete bollocks.
I can stand in the middle of my city at speakers corner and spout off that I think the Queen should be de-throned, and make our island a republic, I can stand there and spout that, Tony Blair is a hopeless case, and couldn't organise a shag in a brothel. I can spout off that the church of Scotland is run by idiots.....but the second I spout off about what is in Glasgow, a minority faith, and it's fanatical zealots overseas, alarm bells start ringing, and within twenty minutes, the cops will arrive and advise me of my rights.

I quote Rowan Atkinson “A joke is essentially an exaggerated truth and the truth can hurt. Should the predictability of offence being taken mean that you have committed a crime? Is it an unacceptable joke – an illegal joke – simply because some are bound to be offended by it? Surely not. The right to offend is more important than the right not to be offended"
“However, we have to address the issues that have driven the government to their current position. We have to sympathise and empathise with the most conspicuous promoters of this legislation, in particular British Muslims. They are not in an easy position. The fact that so much international terrorism is being perpetrated allegedly in the name of Islam, is a source of horror and embarrassment to the vast majority of Muslims living in this country and yet they frequently experience antagonism as a result.
“Their dilemma must be understood and I appreciate that this measure is an attempt to provide comfort and protection to them but unfortunately it is a wholly inappropriate response far more likely to promote tension between communities than tolerance. Because there is a bigger picture.
“There has been some slightly patronising comment from senior figures in the Home Office about the entry into the debate about this legislation by people like me. As if there are serious issues of racial discontent and public disorder in society and all we're worrying about is some silly vicar jokes. As if we're looking at the little picture whereas the government is looking at the big. When actually I think the opposite is the case.
“It's the government who have been lobbied down into a small corner of the frame whereas what I'm asking you to consider are huge issues. The defence of intellectual curiosity, the right to criticise ideas, whatever form they have and the right to ridicule the ridiculous, in whatever context it lies.
“The government may have a political nut to crack but they've selected a sledgehammer for the job. My plea is for them to look at what they're holding in their hands and see what an unwieldy and wholly inappropriate tool they have chosen.
Sometimes I wonder who are the comedians. The ones we vote for, and hold high office, such as our Prime Minister, and the US President, or people like Rowan Atkinson who made more sense the day he made that speech .
All of of us witnessed the millions of marchers who took to the streets in many different parts of the world, including the US & the UK ,to show they were opposed to the war in Iraq. I'm still waiting for the massed marches of Muslims who are opposed to the acts of terrorism, and our right to free speech, by their own countrymen
I consider everybody fair game. I can joke about anything, including my own countrymen. I wouldn't make a continual bashing case out of it, If I did, then I'd have to count myself in with the mindless bigots, hypocrits, zealots, and lunatics I've been talking about.

We have not gone that far in the States yet (although we do have our moments) To me it is another example of European governments caving in to Islamic extremists in the hope that their appeasement will spare them attacks..Good luck with that..

Pat Buchanan (not a person I'd normally have ANY agreement with, ever) has stated publicly that he fears for the loss of our Americanism if the borders aren't controlled. I do, too. The PC people, of course, accuse me of racism, hate, bigotry, etc, etc, etc....but the fact is, I love our language and I love our culture and I don't want to see that destroyed by people with a different agenda.
No doubt those who believe borders are merely artificial constructs will disagree with me, which is their right.
But this is not a peaceful immigration. It's deliberate and it has no intention of preserving! The intention is to destroy! If you see what's happening in Europe, you know what I mean.
The French nation will be Islamic, if the immigrants have their way...and then, who's next?
You'll really miss Monty Python, Footballers' Wives and old Benny Hill tapes.....
