The Tower of Babel

Post by Raven »

Mankind speaking one language. And what they were accomplishing was really getting Gods attention.

But it couldnt have been good. What exactly were they doing?

I have a theory about the aftermath. After we no longer understood each other, fear and suspicion grew. Next thing you know, one set of folks who spoke 'this' way were better than the folks who spoke 'that' way. Could this have been the beginning of predjudice? All this because they were building the wrong kind of tower?

But did He also show us how to build the right kind, and give us back the one language of the scriptures?

As far as I'm concerned this was one of God's bad moments. If we are meant to try and reach heaven or aspire to it why would he be so mad when they tried to build the tower. He shows unGodlike flaws in this story.

The tower of Babel is a myth or folk tale invented to explain the numerous languages that developed around the world. It was a good one for the time.

Somehow I just knew you were going to say that! :yh_laugh

Now just exactly WHY do you think it is a myth? Why couldnt the Lord (who I believe gave us language) confuse the issue, by giving us others?

Archaeological evidence of the great ziggurats in Ur and Babylon weigh in more of in favor of, than against.

Found a link you might check out.

We human beings are a complex animal. We have many sides to us. There is the loving and peaceful side that longs for harmony. Then there is the side that is suspicious, distrustful, greedy and lusty which wants to outdo others. Dependant on our life's experiences, the environment we are moulded, and our own guiding principals determines which side of us dominates our attitudes and behaviour.

When building the tower of Babel, if indeed this is a true story, without any interferance from God one group of people could not really have jointly survived long enough to achieve it's aims. Even today we can see different peoples, communities, groups etc trying to build their own towers of Babel; with an endless number within them trying to bring the top ones down or spliting up to form other groups etc. Each entity think they are more right then others and in due course some more superior to others. Prejudice is then therefore bred and perpetuated.

Why couldn't God do that? Rather simply He doesn't have to work that way and in fact doesn't.
