OK, here's the deal. I have a 4 month-old HP pavillion 6000 laptop, very nice. The problem is I got a virus or sothething onto the machine through my own illegallity and computer idiocy. So basically I had to reload Windows XP and trash the hard drive, oh dear. Now that worked fine, and I managed to save a lot of files as well so not too much damage done. Now the problem is that I got a copy of Norton 2005 antiviral protection with the machine, but when I tried to reinstall it the bugger wouldn't work, kept hitting a wnscan.exe file or something that buggered it up. I went on to the symantec website and did all the things they told me, no good, I tried funny things with the registry, no good, I tried to let them access the C:/ drive to see what it was, no good, has anyone ever encountered anything like this before and if so, what did you do?

When I typed in Winscan.exe a number to references to Trojans came up. It may not be the case but I got this as the following info.
Please follow the instructions for removing Trojans.
Windows NT/2000/XP/2003
In Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 you will also need to edit the following registry entry for each user who ran the virus. The removal of this entry is optional in Windows 95/98/Me. Please read the warning about editing the registry.
At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.
Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export Range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.
Each user has a registry area named HKEY_USERS

Thank you girls and covenant, and thanks for not making me do anything, you know. Anyway, I checked again and the bugger that is causing all the problems is called "2753.SAVscan.exe.3333244E_F73A_407Q_etc. etc." does that also sound like a trojan or a worm or something, its an exe. anyway so I'm presuming its a virus, I will google it to see what comes up. Any other ideas are more than welcome.

Norton has some conflict with windows XP that stops it working-I read somewhere that microsft is now trying to get people to use their anti virus software and shut out all the companies that have made a living out of getting windows to work properely. This was a linux site so it may be untrue.
try

for a thing called registry mechanic. You can try a free trial version before paying, won't fix everything but should give you an indication if it will work before buying. They even answer questions if you ask them. I paid the £20 or so to get the full product and find it pretty good at forestalling problems with windows. An australian company I think. The antivirus stuff is good as well.
also grisoft.com
You can download a free virus checker that is pretty good-they seem to use it as a loss leader to get people to buy the anti-virus and firewall packegaes they sell. Czechoslovakian company.
Forget the sexual favours just send a bottle of baileys if it works.

Yup, I had a similar problem, and it prevented me signing on hotmail and the like, Its to do with the conflict between the Windows firewalll and the Norton Firewall I seem to remember.

What are you re-installing the operating system for, Galbally? When I have a problem, I just run the "restore" program. It goes back to a backup copy it made a few days or weeks ago and anything that happened since then is like it never happened!

OK OK, thanks everyone, that was great, I appreciated all the posts, but somehow I have managed to fix it now, and even Norton is working. Actually I think Clancey mentioned System Mechanic, and you know, I think thats where the touble started as I got a copy of that as a download, that was, lets say, a little fresh, and thats where the trouble started. Let that be a warning to all cyber lawbreakers.
PS, I didn't do nothing, right?, nobody saw anything. Problem? talk to the lawyers.
