I did wonder, as the image has "ostrich.jpg" as it's name:-3

This av is labelled on the internet as an ostrich but BR called it an emu.
As Marie's pics show, they both look very similar so I don't really think it matters what you call it, ostrich, emu, or Fred!
A rose by any other name smells as sweet and an ostrich called an emu still looks cute and funny! So what does it matter?

They are both odd looking, but still strangely appealing.

A fella here had an ostrich farm. Made the neighbors a b it miffed, due to the odor. He lost the farm and his land, and birds due to non payment of taxes. Neighbors were not unhappy to see him go. A former coworker used to live across the street.

TSK! What's all this about birds being "dumb?" Don't you know that birds are born knowing everything they'll ever need to know about life? They know how to find food, attract mates, raise young and do whatever they need to do. WE, on the other hand, have to be taught.
Ostriches live in male-dominated "harems" which include several females. The girls scratch a shallow "nest" in the ground and each lays her egg in the same nest. The male, being black, sits on the eggs at night. The females, being brownish, sit on the eggs during the day. (Better camouflage--pretty cool, eh?) There IS an "alpha" female, and if she decides there are too many eggs in the nest, she'll kick out some of the OTHER girls' eggs, leaving hers.)
Ostriches, emus, rheas, kiwis and cassowaries are called "ratites"...their ability to fly has disappeared. They don't need to fly...they can run very quickly...imagine yourself in the way of a 300-pound bird with an enormous beak?
I've seen them in Africa, keeping up with zebra and giraffes.
They're great survivors and a good image for BR!

(If you REALLY get started thinking about evolution....consider the brilliance of the transition between reptile and bird! I was holding a snake in the sun the other day, looking at the "rainbows" in the light refracted off its scales and was suddenly struck by the similarity between those scales and peafowl feathers! They refract light the same way...a legacy of the old reptilian days!)

I hate to sidetrack this thread.....BUT I WILL! Some snakes DO have live births! Snakes use all the methods--some lay eggs which need incubation, some lay eggs which hatch just before or during extrusion and others have live births. It's a puzzlement.
You've given me an idea, though....has there been a discussion on evolution here at FG?
:sneaky:
