Wilderness implies to me more than the wasteland you describe here. Longing for that which is lost is a feeling shared by many. Yes, it is sad but it does go away and is replaced by wilderness of a lusher variety.

I find it hard to concieve a wilderness of a lusher variety. In my humble opinion its either a wilderness as a wasteland or a situation of uncertainty (symbolically) or something else. A wilderness of a lusher variety drifts my mind to a garden or something that's pleasant but definately not a wilderness in the true sense of the world.
A formula for tact: "Be brief politely, be aggressive smilingly, be emphatic pleasantly, be positive diplomatically, be right graciously".
