It seems the serious heat wave has hit our neck of the woods. It is supposed to be in the high 90's here...posibly to hit 100. With the heat index it is supposed to feel much hotter.
We have only hit 100 In Rochester about 7 times since temps have been recorded. And I think never in August.
Some of the schools have cancelled summer school classes for the rest of the week, so the kids would not be out walking in it. They are even opening a bunch of the fire hydrants in the city.

It will be hotter tomorrow, then cool down after that.
I got home so late, I didn't take my walk today, since it is just under 100.

I'm in Illinois, the temp on my deck right now is 100 with an index of 120. It has been like this for two weeks without rain. We are losing our crops, have all ready lost our grass. The poor people in St. louis have been without electricity for two weeks tommorrow. Oh they are getting it back on but very slowly. Ameren is working day and night but St. Louis is a large city. Thank God we have electricity and AC.

It's hard to imagine how people can survive without air conditioning in this kind of weather. Have there been many deaths in your area?

Please understand I'm not bragging, I'm complaining but the difference between Austin and Ill. is the humidity. This morning the temp. was 74 but the humidity was 87. We take a shower and even with AC we can never get really dry. Imagine how those people in St. Louis suffered. That is the reason the midwest raises corn, the dam humidity. Yes to the other person, St. Louis has lost 6 people, all men to the heat. We have been watching our elderly because even tho they have AC they won't use it because of the expense. :-6

Seems like everyone is getting nailed with this oppressive heat. It's hit 113 with the heat index here. Haven't seen this kind of heat since I was a kid! I don't mind it so much, except that it's too hot to ride in the middle of the day. The heat from the bike makes it completely unbearable, and I won't ride in shorts, etc. I just go for late-night rides! Keep cool, everyone! :yh_sweat

Is St. Louis quite a poor area?
I heard that after Hurricane Katrina the rich areas were guarded and had problems fixed asap, whilst the poor areas had to wait weeks for supplies to be reallocated.
Here we have also lost elderly folks to the heat wave. These are the folks who fought in two world wars to ensure our freedom and who die from hypothermia in winter and heat exhaustion in summer because they cannot afford heating or air conditioning. It's a joke! A very bad one!

Yep you all are getting what we had for two 1/2 weeks straight the heat wave from HELL.. !! :-6 To hot to move during the day, kinda like AFRICA.. It killed if I remember the numbers correctly about 130 people in California mostly the elderly, very hard on them.
Word to the wise don't run your Laptop in this heat they aren't built for extreme heat at all, unless your setting with a fan directly on it your risking frying your hard drive. Also you desktop PC are made to run properly in extreme heat leave them of if at all possible or have a fan directly on them... HEAT IS NOT FRIEND OF LAPTOPS OR DESKTOPS..:-6 :-6

The Heat wave in the UK appears to be over....for now anyway. It is cloudy some of the time and very windy where i am which freshens things up ......in the 70s here today.
We still need rain though, and LOTS of it. My garden is various shades of brown and I can only hope that the roots survive and that the plants 'come back' next year with vigour.
I hand water the precious stuff, but it is too big a job to water the entire garden daily.
I had one scare....I have a small oak tree in a tub that my husbands Nan grew from an acorn....it dropped all it's leaves and looked dead. I gave it some 'intensive' care and it is now recovering.....phew....

Good advice, Carla. I have a fan on the table next to my PC. I keep it running whenever I have the computer on.
Last night I was sitting in the living room using my laptop. Even with the window AC going, and the fan, the laptop got rather warm.

The Buffalo Bills are in town for thier training camp. They have even been adjusting thier training schedule due to the heat. Yesterday they switched to an evening practice, and today they are having a morning practice only.

hard to say. Last winter here was pretty mild as far as snowfall went. We had hardly any significant accumulation.
Next winter will probably be a bear, with blizzards every week or something

We just had a brief rainshower go through. Helped some, but not much.
I always worry about a power outage when I am not at home, because Trixie cannot tolerate long periods of extreme heat.

We were watching the news the other day at work and they we talking about the heat wave in NY and we were wondering were all the national news was when we were having this heat wave here three weeks ago and it is still going on. I suppose they think the south is used to it and it's not newsworthy.
I got in my car and it said the temp was 104 outside and that was without the heat index. My AC in my car never cooled before I got home.
It cooled down to the mid nineties and now it is back up. Supposed to be 101 today not including the heat index. We had no deaths but I suppose that is because we are used to it and we know what to do.
Most southerners die during the winter months from fires and cardon monoxide and keeping generators inside the house (DUH!). So, although my heart goes out to everyone sweltering now, better you than me! LOL Treat the heat like you treat the flu.....plenty of fluids, rest and stay indoors.
And if you ever cop a chill, come see me. I'll put you on the front porch with a damp wash cloth, a funeral fan and some sweet iced tea. :wah:

It's Soooo Hot!
The birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.
The trees are whistling for the dogs.
The best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
Hot water now comes out of both taps.
You can make sun tea instantly.
You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.
The temperature drops below 95 F (35 C) and you feel a little chilly.
You discover that in July it only takes 2 fingers to steer your car.
You discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.
You actually burn your hand opening the car door.
You break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 a.m.
Your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death?"
You realize that asphalt has a liquid state.
The potatoes cook underground, so all you have to do is pull one out and add butter, salt and pepper. and of course Sour Cream, diced onions and a few serving spoons of Chile
Farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs.
The cows are giving evaporated milk.
STAY COOL!

No Rapunzel, St Louis is not a poor area. As a matter of fact most areas around St Louis are far from poor. We had 2 severe storms with high winds come thru almost back to back that blew down trees and limbs that knocked out power lines all over the place. We had at one time about half a million customers out of electric. Most all of it is back on now for about a week but we had some residences that were without power for 8-9 days. Ours was only out for three day but we are on well water so we not only were out of power we were out of water too.

Grumpaz really enjoyed your list of heat problems. Glad to see another midwesterner on here. We are also big Rams fans. For you folk who drive to work and get in long lines of traffic I saw a reporter on the St. Louis t.v. station imform drivers if their car started to heat up shut off the AC and turn on the heater. He explained why it helped but of course I forgot. Might try it and save a tow bill. :driving:
