in the pc section but I cant find it at the moment. The cable guy just left, he was doing unrelated work but he did a speed test on my broadband. Im good there, Im at like 47 gazillion million pakooky bytey er whatever, but theres a lag. He said it was my firewall. I just realized I have 2 firewalls so I turned 1 off. What else can I do with the settings to maximize my terroristic methods on FG. Ultimately I would prefer to zing here and zing there leaving destruction in my wake so fast it will make your head spin.

when you say there's a lag - do you mean that - for example - you click on a link, and it takes a few seconds before your browser starts to go to the site? or everything seems rather slow? or?

turning off the second firewall is good - but usually if you've had two firewalls live for some interval, you'll want to reboot *everything* - your PC, your cable router, etc - as the one firewall may be fighting against the effects of that second firewall even though it's off now.

just off the top of my pointy head.

Yep what Anastrophe said.. and turn off the Windows Firewall it is the worst pain in arse going. Control panel the globe with the brick wall in front of it TURN IT OFF.

If you gotta have a firewall make it one you have total control over.. then set the coverage to what you think not the overkill they come with.. :-5

i've been using sygate free personal firewall for years, love it, not much desire to change it - but it's not available any more.

however, PC magazine recently rated Comodo's free personal firewall very highly. i've downloaded it and plan on trying it.

i've never liked zonealarm which is the most popular personal firewall.

whenever possible, a hardware firewall is the most desireable.

Clear out all those spiders for a start!!

The thing that I am guilty of is leaving on programs that I have downloaded and never use again. The same with web pages stored. A good hour spent going through everything on your machine will be time well spent. You'll wonder why on earth you had all this stuff on anyway.

A clean machine is a lean machine - it might even speed up all those thought-provoking entries on FG!

meltonpie, Excellent point just spent the last two week at work doing just this on every machine on the floor.. amazing how a machine speeds up when clean.

Another life saver that I have been using for about a year is another freeware program called "WINDOWS STARTUP INSPECTOR" It does just that gives you a list of every stinking program that has placed itself in your startup daily. It allow you to delete them forever.. and if they come back you can delete them again... love it.. I have 50 PC's 4 servers, and 6 laptops to manage daily and the stuff that gets installed on them without anyone knowing is freaky.. WINDOWS STARTUP INPECTOR gives me control. There is very little that actually need to be in your startup routine on a PC.. Try it it is simple and sweet..

Ok well I did the opposite. I turned off Zone Alarm firewall and left Microsofts wall up, so I should reverse this then ? Also this morning I did a thorough cleaning of crap Ive had. As it stands Im moving around pretty good right now.
