Ever been to the Outer Banks (OBX) of North Carolina? If you love to relax, fish, walk on beautiful, shell filled, sandy beaches, you might want to vacation here.
We flew in to Norfolk, VA. and rented a car and drove down. We rented a house and had the time of our lives! One day we went to Roanoke Island to the town of Manteo and toured the Elizabeth II ( an exact replica of the original ship that brought the 1st settlers over to Virginia in 1585). We also toured the aquarium and went into "old town". There's a great interactive museum also and a replica of the village the settlers lived in.
On another day, we took a 40 minute ferry ride to Ocracoke Island. Home of Teach's Hole. Edward Teach is the real name of Blackbeard, the famous (infamous?) pirate. Tons of things to do there.
And then there's the famous Cape Hatteras lighthouse in Buxton, NC. Great places to eat and lots of water fun. The sunsets are like none I've seen before. The perfect time to go would be IMO, mid to late May. It's "off season" and cheaper, yet everything is open.

Hubbie and I went last summer. We stayed in Kill Devil Hills area. I love how its so NON commercial there. Its mostly homes with little mom and pop shops. There is a great grocery in the Duck area with all kinds of foreign wines and cheeses and olives and stuff. Really nice place!
