Could You spend the winter isolated from life?

Post by Marie5656 »

OK, hear me out on this one. I could not sleep last night, and my brain was going to some strange places. I was thinking of Stephen King's book "The Shining". The basic premise of the story is that a man is hired to be the winter caretaker for a summer resort hotel in Colorado..which is closed for the winter. Thing is, come hard winter, the family would be completly snowed in till spring.

Of course, it then gets the SK touch, and goes bad from there.

Here is my question for you, and think it out. Would you consider taking such a job (without the creepy stuff) if it meant you and your family would be snowbound in the place for 3 or 4 months. Allowing there would be sufficent power, heat, food and electronic amennities (computer, TV, stereo etc). If allowed, would you want to bring a small group of friends or family with you?

I am going to answer, but in a separate response.

Hmmmmmmm . . . interesting question.

YES I would do it. I'd take my hubby, dog and cat with me. I'd make good use of the phone and my computer.

I think it would be quite an experience.

And I'm always up for new experiences! :-6

How but you guys?

I say yes, I would take the job. I am not sure how Rick would handle the isolation, but I think I could handle it. I think I would want a small group with us (maybe one or two other couples). As long as we would have food, and reliable entertainment...such as satellite Television, computer, phone...and my books.

I would probably bring some cook books, or videos to learn new recipes. Also some needle work projects. Something to keep me occupied.

But because I tend to be most comfortable around just a few people, or even alone, I do not think I would have any issues.

I would do it in a heart beat, I would take along my pets for company, I think it would be awesome, as long as I was guaranteed I would be safe :D

Nope, I wouldn't go. I can't stand being inside during the wintertime as it is here. I have to go outside every day, blizzards or whatever.

Now, if that was a tropical island, with sun and waves, I would! But snow, no way.:(

I could do it very easily, especially this winter, after this temporary separation from my husband. Sounds like a perfect way to get to know each other all over again.

I'd do it but only if all the creepy stuff was going on.....be kinda like my own personal Halloween amusement park.

If it didn't have all the creepy stuff then I'd probably get really bored and go completely insane.

It's as close as you can get to it! :) When it gets cold here in New England, we just jump on a plane, & 3 hours later we're there in Florida, (getting into our Florida car) , right where we left off after breakfast. Then having lunch in one of our favoriate restaurants in the warmth! Ain't life grand!

I spent four years in a village on the Yukon. The road closed by October 1 and didn't open until May. Weather permitting there was a mail plane a couple times a week. There was no t.v., no phone until the last year, and few new people in and out. The population was about 50, of whom half were kids.

Maybe not like being snowed in at an isolated ski resort, but i will tell you for sure that by May everyone was GLAD to see the road open. You soon know everyone's life story..and by year four, are very tired of the same old scene. Complete isolation would have been a joy!

I am glad I posed this question. Some interesting responses here.

I, for one, would still be quite interested in this type of thing. Seems there could also me plenty of time for reflection and self discovery.

Plus, the thought of having full run of a resort hotel...pool, exercise facilities..that kind of stuff. I am also considering the thought of a large great room with a huge fireplace.

Wow, wish I could do it!!
