Worried about the lure of the devil, a Vatican-linked university yesterday debuted its latest course offering a class on Satanism, black magic and exorcism.
The Class for clergy and seminarians at the Pontifical Academy 'Regina Apostolorum' has arisen from alarm about Satanic practices among young people in Italy.
In January eight people believed to belong to a Satanic sect were ordered to stand trial for their alleged role in three ritual killings.
One of the victims was a 19-year old girl stabbed to death in 1998.
The updated exorcism rite was a reflection of Pope John Paul 11's efforts to convince religious sceptics that the devil is very much about in the world.

Talk of satanism always seems so remote, like it happens somewhere in Transylvania or some other remote place but not "at home".
Reality set in when I met a young woman who had been subjected to ritual abuse in her childhood. Ritual abuse is when children of satanic cult members are given to the cult for sexual and other ritual purposes. The children are told that they can be "seen" whereever they go and that if they ever tell anyone about the abuse they will hurt in cruel and unusual ways.
This woman was recovering and working as a healer...but she still was admittedly frightened when she told me about it. I assured her that she was capable of protecting herself now, especially as a healer, but she said she couldn't shake the feeling that they really did have the ability to see and find her for the rest of her life.
Satanism is a serious thing.

Well, I hope sceptics about the existence of the Devil should be interested in this serious issue.

I cannot really agree that Satanism is a serious problem. I am also skeptical about some of the claims that I see about child sexual ritual abuse. Satanists, usually do not believe in the existemnce of Satan. The Church of Satan website
If one wants to talk about child sex abuse, here is a document of some of the Christian sex abuse against children in 1992. I would be a heck of a lot more scared of Pastor Dan being alone with my kids than I would a friend or family member who wears inverted pentacles and black robes.
The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth
by Anton Szandor LaVey ©1967
1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
3. When in another’s lair, show him respect or else do not go there.
4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.
5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.
7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
9. Do not harm little children.
10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.
The Nine Satanic Sins
by Anton Szandor LaVey ©1987
1. Stupidityâ€The top of the list for Satanic Sins. The Cardinal Sin of Satanism. It’s too bad that stupidity isn’t painful. Ignorance is one thing, but our society thrives increasingly on stupidity. It depends on people going along with whatever they are told. The media promotes a cultivated stupidity as a posture that is not only acceptable but laudable. Satanists must learn to see through the tricks and cannot afford to be stupid.
2. Pretentiousnessâ€Empty posturing can be most irritating and isn’t applying the cardinal rules of Lesser Magic. On equal footing with stupidity for what keeps the money in circulation these days. Everyone’s made to feel like a big shot, whether they can come up with the goods or not.
3. Solipsismâ€Can be very dangerous for Satanists. Projecting your reactions, responses and sensibilities onto someone who is probably far less attuned than you are. It is the mistake of expecting people to give you the same consideration, courtesy and respect that you naturally give them. They won’t. Instead, Satanists must strive to apply the dictum of “Do unto others as they do unto you.†It’s work for most of us and requires constant vigilance lest you slip into a comfortable illusion of everyone being like you. As has been said, certain utopias would be ideal in a nation of philosophers, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, from a Machiavellian standpoint) we are far from that point.
4. Self-deceitâ€It’s in the “Nine Satanic Statements†but deserves to be repeated here. Another cardinal sin. We must not pay homage to any of the sacred cows presented to us, including the roles we are expected to play ourselves. The only time self-deceit should be entered into is when it’s fun, and with awareness. But then, it’s not self-deceit!
5. Herd Conformityâ€That’s obvious from a Satanic stance. It’s all right to conform to a person’s wishes, if it ultimately benefits you. But only fools follow along with the herd, letting an impersonal entity dictate to you. The key is to choose a master wisely instead of being enslaved by the whims of the many.
6. Lack of Perspectiveâ€Again, this one can lead to a lot of pain for a Satanist. You must never lose sight of who and what you are, and what a threat you can be, by your very existence. We are making history right now, every day. Always keep the wider historical and social picture in mind. That is an important key to both Lesser and Greater Magic. See the patterns and fit things together as you want the pieces to fall into place. Do not be swayed by herd constraintsâ€know that you are working on another level entirely from the rest of the world.
7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxiesâ€Be aware that this is one of the keys to brainwashing people into accepting something new and different, when in reality it’s something that was once widely accepted but is now presented in a new package. We are expected to rave about the genius of the creator and forget the original. This makes for a disposable society.
8. Counterproductive Prideâ€That first word is important. Pride is great up to the point you begin to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The rule of Satanism is: if it works for you, great. When it stops working for you, when you’ve painted yourself into a corner and the only way out is to say, I’m sorry, I made a mistake, I wish we could compromise somehow, then do it.
9. Lack of Aestheticsâ€This is the physical application of the Balance Factor. Aesthetics is important in Lesser Magic and should be cultivated. It is obvious that no one can collect any money off classical standards of beauty and form most of the time so they are discouraged in a consumer society, but an eye for beauty, for balance, is an essential Satanic tool and must be applied for greatest magical effectiveness. It’s not what’s supposed to be pleasingâ€it’s what is. Aesthetics is a personal thing, reflective of one’s own nature, but there are universally pleasing and harmonious configurations that should not be denied.
Dunno, seems that Satanists are not supposed to hurt kids.

For those in the British Isles, in Channel 4 land mass. Next Thursday @ 11pm,this station is to televise the exorcism of a man who claims to be possessed by evil, and will carry out scientific monitoring to determine on whether it is successful.

According to a Fr Pat Collins, a Vincentian priest based in Ireland, and is an exorcist. "As I know from experience, obsessed people need a simple exorcism which can be proved by any faith-filled believer, for instance, I remember praying, a number of years ago, for a 12-year old girl who had been involved in the occult. I asked the Spirit of God to free her from a morbid spirit of divination. Thankfully, it was effective and she experienced inner peace from then onwards."
"When people are possessed, they suffer from a spiritual psychosis because the devil seems to take over their entire personality. As a result they have extraordinary physical strenght which is inconsistent with their age and health, and also an ability to speak unknown languages and to discern hidden and distant things. He goes on to say, "I have never met a possessed person over the age of 30 years. The vast majority of the bizarre behaviours are children under 18. the Catholic Church need to appoint more exorcists who have been trained to deal, not only with disturbed buildings, but also with people who are oppressed by evil.

I wonder if the church tried to evaluate these 'possessed' kids before trying to cast out their devils. There are mental illnesses that younger people are more subject to that could fit what he described.

Well, I hope sceptics about the existence of the Devil should be interested in this serious issue.
The devil is an imaginery creation of the medeival church to try and frighten people in to going to church and to control them. The serious issue is the spread of these ludicrous ideas and the attempts of the church to gain back the blind unthinking following they had in medeival times by pretending that anyone who thinks it a load of rubbish has been influenced by Satan. Hopefully people are not so gullible nowadays.

I am not sure where I stand on this issue. But I do have a problem with folks who are apparently evil and I do mean evil: Ted Bundy, Jeffery Dahmer, Charles Manson, Clifford Olsen etc. What really mankes these folks tick?

Well, It could possibly have something to do with the frontal lobe of the brain. Studies have been done that suggest that people of certain pathologies and behavioral disorders may have a defective, improperly functioning, or a poorly communicating frontal lobe.

Catholic priests are not "supposed to hurt kids" either, and we see it going on every day, like some kind of plague!!

No, I have met several Satanists, thus far, I have not met one that I felt threatened by. I don't exactly think it is a cushy religion, but I am extremely skeptical about the scare stories put out there about children used in satanic ritual abuse. Remember, many of these stories lump all occultic activities into the label of Satanism. Someone could possibly harmed in some voodoo practice, say, and it would be labeled as satanic. We have quite a few Satanists, Wiccans, witches, and practicers of Santaria around here from what I've seen. I think I have yet to see a claim about ritual abuse.
Even the FBI has issued statements within bureau to treat such claims of ritual abuse with the utmost of skeptism during an investigation about ritual abuse claims.

Also, Babyrider, I get what you are saying. I do not trust someone just because they are in an authoritative position with my children. I am very cautious about whom I leave my children with. I am well aware that a Satanist could molest or kill, that is because they are human. I only pointerd out that child ritual abuse is not something that is ordained by the tenants of the religion. It just seems that the Catholic Church's policy of discretion in dealing with molesting priests actually seems, in my mind, to quietly sanction the practice. I added the link about Christian child sex abuse to bring common sense to the whole outlook. Satanists are being given a very bad rap, seems the Christian church should take it's share of the guilt and bear some of the blame for religious sex abuse.
