i let my daughter have a shot of the p.c tonight & she downloaded an update to windows media player (she thought she was doing a good thing)
anyway the sound has gone & the whole set up looks completely different to me so im lost, anyone know how to get my sound back?

Have you tried to disconnect WMP and then see how things work? My sympathies!

have you got 'System Restore' ? If you have , you can tell your computer to go back to the day before the dodgy stuff was downloaded and your old Media Player will be restored and the new version will disappear.

diuretic - sound settings, oh there are so many options & the set up is so complicated compared to what i had, its stressing me out, im scared to touch anything, what other players are there?
bez - yeah this is likely my best option, ive never used it so am a bit scared :-3

I've used it recently and it's easy (on windows XP anyway)......honest. I installed something but was unable to un-install it afterwards and system restore was my only option.
You can also reverse the 'restore' if it doesn't work.
Don't confuse this with the sytem recovery programme that takes you computer back to factory settings...you would only use this in dire emergencies.
