Federal Court orders removal of Cross

Post by Accountable »

Our nation is securely secular. The cross doesn't have a strictly Christian - um, message? flavor? - any more, especially in the context of a memorial.

I don't think the cross in question is important as a christian symbol to any but those who want it taken down. If it were a statue of a beagle protested by animal rights people (I know, I know, but follow my point) the resistance would be just as strong, for exactly the same reasons as are expressed here.

Lulu, you don't see this as impending on freedom of expression? Scratch that. Public land, public funds. I only leave the question to let you know I considered and rejected it.

I have to agree with Accountable here. The cross has a double meaning for most of us, Death and Crucifixion. Death: purely because that's what most people put on the graves of their loved ones. A cross means death, not a religious death, just death.

Tell me, where you live, do people put crosses on the sides of the road where somebody died? That's public land, my taxes pay to cut that grass. Why isn't anyone out there tearing them down? Why is it legal? Some are now becoming more permanent and more elaborate. Aside from just creeping me out, that's public land and they are all crosses.

And isn't the absence of any religious icons supporting atheism and therefore unconstitutional? So every mountaintop without a religious fixture on it is saying that that town or those people support atheism? Maybe we should have a different religious icon every 15 feet on every public piece of land, including nothing on one of those spots (unless there is a symbol for atheism and agnostic (or agnostisim?)).

This country can go either way. No icons whatsoever, with a sign, of course, stating that the absence of any icons does not support atheism, or one for everyone.

Or people can get a life and find something else to pull their hair out about. Maybe get a freaking hobby.

And another thing. . . .

People don't stop at public land, soon they start complaining about private property and what offends them there. And it's not just religion, it's flavor or sentiment or symbols and signs.

Near me, on the interstate, a private citizen has chosen to wave the Confederate flag from a pole about 30 feet high right off the interstate and he illuminates it at night. It's huge and you can see it from a half mile away. One of our wonderful state senators decided he didn't like it and wanted to have it taken down. Tried to get the people behind him. Took it to court and lost. Tried to pass a bill and lost. It offended him but it was on private property. How much did it cost that citizen in time and money to protect his rights? Rights that never should have been attacked.

So, keep ignoring the rights of some and no one will be there to help you when they trample on your rights. Life's too short, people. Get a grip and feed the homeless or foster a child. Do something to take your mind off other peoples religion.
