Official advice to avoid heatstroke

(Filed: 03/07/2006)

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include headaches, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, muscle weakness or cramps, pale skin and a high temperature.

Heatstroke sufferers are advised to find somewhere cool and drink plenty of water or fruit juice. They should take a lukewarm shower or sponge themselves with cold water.

Heatstroke can develop if heat exhaustion is not treated, or appear without warning. It can be fatal.

Symptoms include headaches, nausea, an intense thirst, sleepiness, hot, red and dry skin, a rise in temperature, confusion, aggression, convulsions and fainting.

Older people, babies and young children are at most risk. Other high-risk people include the ill, those taking alcohol or illegal drugs and people with mobility problems.
