The Great Bend Tunnel is only about 8 or 10 minutes from my house. This is a statue of John Henry "The Steel Driving Man" that weilded his hammer to beat a steam powered drill in the construction of this tunnel.

He is commemorated by the legend, in song and now we have a John Henry festival each year.

Please, if you are not familiar with the 'Legend of John Henry', google it. It is a good story, especially the part that deals with this gentle giants love for his wife.

(1) Designed in 1964 by James A Roberts, the Rotunda is the most visible symbol of the city centre redevelopment that transformed the Bull ring area in that decade.

For many Brummies the Rotunda is a symbol of Birmingham, and stands out as a popular landmark.

It was originally planned to be 12 storeys high with a roof top restaurant. There was also talk of a cinema and a crèche. The finished Rotunda is bigger - 25 storeys - but less glamorous. No food, no films, no babies, just offices.

The view from the top of the Rotunda is spectacular.

(2) Spaghetti Junction, otherwise known as Junction 6 on the M6, is one of Birmingham's most famous - and notorious - landmarks. The junction is officially recorded as Gravelly Hill Interchange, but the title is rarely used. The name "Spaghetti Junction" more closely captures the appearance of the junction, where three motorways meet and tangle with a host of major and minor roads that lead into and out of Birmingham.

Spaghetti Junction, which is about two miles long from end to end, is raised hundreds of feet above the ground on concrete pillars. It was constructed and opened in the early 1970s, along with the section of the M6 to which it is joined. Its main distinction is that most of it is single carriageway, although this is slightly misleading, as there are 7 lanes, of which 6 are in use at any time.

Well, here in Rochester we have the Liberty Pole. http://rocwiki.org/Liberty_Pole

They decorate it with lights at Christmastime, and it looks pretty cool.:-6

Back to the topic, and since I have nothing better to do, here's a picture of the Rennaisance Center, the highlight of the Detroit skyline:
