I have a proposition to make.
Tell me when you were most able to be physically active.
Think about it. My 6 year old grandson is more physically active than I can ever remember being. He has some limitations. My peripheral vision is better than his. I stop and think more than he does.
So, who is the safest in crossing the road?
At what age do you think it is safe for him to to cross a road?
Researched evidence suggests that any child under the age of 10 does not have the skills to safely cross a road.

When I was 6, my daily trip to school involved crossing one main "A" road (without any pedestrian-priority crossing or central reservation), one mile on a bus, one town centre bus station change, and a nine mile bus ride over the moors past Clowbridge Reservoir to a main road stop not far from the school. Coming back involved reversing that with the road crossings different. I was taken on the first day to show me the route, and from then on it was up to me. I can't remember feeling unsafe, and I don't look back on it thinking I might have been.
I'll read the evidence and say what I think of it if you like. It doesn't square with my own experience. I'm far more likely to get run over now, I'm more arrogant and I don't look before I leap.
The only times I've come close to being hit by traffic, as a pedestrian, is when I've stepped into the road without looking while preoccupied, often with a book or mentally puzzling something out. I get half way over, realize what I've done, and chalk up yet another statistical survival. I never did that when I was at school, I was far more observant.
