Yeah, I saw the news clip on this. Basically it's just an "assault-the-innocent-passerby" tactic. Brutal behavior and just another sign of our times.:(

I couldnt believe it. Where does this violent behavior come from. I know your argument on movies, music, etc, but honestly Jives, I grew up with some pretty violent stuff as well as a conscience. I dont have the heart to hurt someone. Do you think maybe these teenagers are totally desensitized or have no conscience at all? I mean this is absolutely deplorable!

I would spank the **** outta my child for this. And I dont spank, (I dont have kids either, but its a discussion, right?:D ). Geez. I cant believe it. Any of your teens show tendencies to do it or think its funny?

I think the broadcaster hit the nail on the head about the jackass and diry sanchez comment,

kids in Britain loved those shows and tried to emulate them.

Whatever happened to aspiring to be like Martin Luther King, Jr? Mother Theresa? Maya Angelou? Oprah, even?

It seems much more applaudable to aspire to be non violent freethinking world changers than some idiot who drinks a goldfish just to puke him back up? Teenagers are weird!!

What in the world are kids thinking. i hope they really throw the book at the ones they have caught doing this so far. Oh and don't worry DG I'm with ya. If I ever found or caught my son or daughter pulling a stunt like this, there would be a spanking and a grounding and whatever else punishment I could think of at the time.

I'm seriously beginning to wonder if folks are not teaching their kids to respect other people. :(

Yeah, the word "aghast" came to my mind while watching that video. It was hands-down the most vicious thing I have ever seen. They walk up to someone, usually a smaller person that wil be an easy target, and when they aren't looking, they smash them in the head.

Where does this violent behavior come from. I know your argument on movies, music, etc, but honestly Jives, I grew up with some pretty violent stuff as well as a conscience. I dont have the heart to hurt someone.

You've got an excellent point there Gal, I've been thinking about that too. I watched a ton of Bugs Bunny when I was a child, but I've never dropped an anvil on anyone's head. Of course Bugs can't compare the the rabid stuff out now, but I think there is more than one variable in play here.

I'm betting the other variable is parenting. What were your parents like? How about your home life. Kids (or adults) that turn to behavior like this must have not only a ton of violence in their entertainment, but possibly in their real lives. Maybe their family life was a total vacuum. They filled it with this kind of thing instead.

I know that's why gangs are so attractive. They replace the family and give the member the attention and sense of belonging they crave. It might be the same here.

Do you think maybe these teenagers are totally desensitized or have no conscience at all? I mean this is absolutely deplorable!

I saw one kid smash his fist into an older woman. To do that you have to have completely lost any sense of empathy. You literally have no sense of right and wrong. It's called sociopathic behavior.

I would spank the **** outta my child for this. And I dont spank, (I dont have kids either, but its a discussion, right?:D ). Geez. I cant believe it. Any of your teens show tendencies to do it or think its funny?

Sadly, yes. I do have a couple of sociopaths, and I've seen others in my school tenure. Usually the family life is unbelievably screwed up. Crack, Meth, Alcohol, Abuse, Prison, Crime...you get the idea.

When I talk to sociopathic children, it's very strange. They absolutely cannot understand that another human being might actually feel or hurt. The idea is strange to them. They do not see others as people, but only as objects.

So, to them, I'm sure that "happy slapping" is similar to kicking a coke machine.

My homelife involved an abuser father (sexually, physically, and mentally). My mother took drugs but was a good mother. I didnt live with her.

I hate to point this out Jives, but IM much younger than you are. I am only 29 so I grew up with violent films and such, not just Bugs Bunny being violent because he dropped an anvil on someone's head.

Its like Accountable says, you are responsible for your pwn actions and should be held accountable for them. Having said that: I grew into a sympathetic, and well rounded human being considering my family dynamic. So I dont view all of these outside forces as an excuse for these idiot teenagers to run rampant. Just my opinion.

I agree, but I also have a big issue with those who think their kids are the golden child and do no wrong. They're usually the biggest bullies and troublemakers in my opinion.

Well that shoots my theory down in a hurry! I'm curious, though. Why do you think that you didn't have some of these problems, DG?

Was there some hope you had or some other role model that steered you away from your parent's behaviors?

Actually I like Jackass too, (well the movie anyway.) That's pretty much young kids acting like young kids.

But this "happy slapping" stuff is more in the "Menace 2 Society' category!

Do you think I have some of these problems? I dont drink in excess. I certainlky dont do drugs. I dont hit, spank, poke or put my hands on anyone or my dogs. I dont have aviolent temper. I hardly ever get mad. So, I would say no. I dont have any of these problems. Im also not attracted to children in a sexual and I would be so bold as to say I have a "normal" sex life.

Ummmmm, role model? Cant really think of one besides maybe a teacher or two but I didnthang around them very long.

They are desensitized...it's the "Frog in the Pot Syndrome". Put a frog in a pot of cold water, he's fine. Turn on the flame under the pot and heat the water slowly, the frog doesn't realize he's being exposed to more and more of what will eventually kill him. Then he's boiled to death and doesn't ever see it coming because the heat came in small increments, allowing him to get used to it and not noticing that his environment was changing and getting toxic. So sad that it's happening to us.

Not at all! I was just curious how you avoided the pitfalls you say your parents had. I know a lot of kids that go right down the same path as their parents.

Yeah, what's your secret for becoming your own person and not picking up any of your parent's bad habits?

I had a first hand experience of how stupid the decisions they made were, I guess. I mean I lived in a small house with no "luxuries" and thats probably because the money went to drugs or some other lame fascination my father had. I wanted more than that. I have a nice home, a nice car, and nice things. I have NO credit card debt and I only owe money on my house which has doubled in price since I bought so, Im fine financially. I have a wonderul husband and I worked my a$$ off to get these things. If you do drugs, you arent responible and you probably dont keep a job and make money so you dont get these things.

As for my dad. thats a sick problem. If I saw even the smallest sign that I had the potential to be a child molester I would haul my ass to a phsyciatrist or a deserted island. Because I know its wrong.

I dont know why sometimes and sometimes I do. Its the same reason I stopped dating losers after that one boyfriend. You are the only person that can make your life better. You have to change your circumstances. You have a CHOICE. You can choose to be a rotten kid with no goals or you can get off your A$$ and do something about it. Maybe these delinquent children need to be told that on a daily basis. Nobody wants to be a criminal, homeless, crack addicted, etc. But maybe they dont know they have like a MILLION resources out there to better their lives.

I get so sick of these kids who have no desire to go to college. There is billions of dollars out there in grants, scholarships and loans (both public and private). So whenever anyone brings that excuse up, I automatically know, they are just flucking lazy.
