I am an organ donor and my sisters, father, mother and husband all want everything donated down to the eyes. We all want to be cremated anyway. For some its a religous belief I think. I dont think people who do dont donate do it because they are selfish pr anything. I juts beleive, I dont need that stuff when I am dead, so if it can help someone else, why not?

My card sais that I'm a donor.
When I worked in the ER and we had a death, we had to call the organ donor center even if the person did not wish to donate. I'm not sure why, but it was protocol. Also you'd be amazed at what is harvested and even on the ages.

No, I would not donate a loved one's organs.
Period.
And on my driving license and my children's, it always says no.
If I needed an organ transplant, I would not do it.
Leave me intact when I die, don't touch or take a thing.
Comment to Sheryl: it is standard protocol to ask, even if they have said no. I find that very offensive of them, for not wanting to respect people's wishes. They asked me numerous times about my husband if I would donate something-until I pulled out the Dr. Chonsi on them to leave us alone.

It's sad that do they do harass the families into donating. I'll agree, but I think it's generally cause there are so many folks on waiting lists.

I'm not too enthusiatic about this organ donor idea. What bothers me most is that it's run by the motor vehicles bureau.I figure if I have to wait in line that long for a kidney, screw it.I'll do with out.
They send you a little card you're supposed to carry in your wallet next too your licence. You're suposed too list the organs you're willing to donate in case you die.
Are hese poeple crazy?
Do you honestly beleive that if a paramedic finds that card on you after accident he's gonna be trying too save your life?no way? He's look'in for parts.
Look,Fred! Heres that lower intestine we've been hopeing for, never mind the cpr, this man is a donor!
Screw that ,If these people want something from me they can have my appendix.thats it.Thats all I'm giveing.Put it the cooler and get the ******* out

we sign the backs of our provincial health care cards. Seems more appropriate than DMV.

Yes, yes, yes. As a nurse I can so appreciate the need for donor organs. When my younger brother was killed in a car accident, he wanted to donate his organs, but as he died at the roadside, the organs weren't viable. What a pity as he was only just 20 and his organs would have given several people priceless gifts.

OMG, I can't believe you think that paramedics would let one person die to save another. All health care professionals are mandated to save those that are able to be saved, and not to do anything that can cause harm. Only when everything has been done that can be done, and the patient is actually brain dead can organs be looked at for harvesting. Come on, give us a break.

Yes, Val is right. I had to write those directives up after the fact, after I had the Power of Attorney for my husband. Otherwise, you are in limbo about these decisions.

Val, up until my dad had his cancer scare, he donated regularly, too. He was a couple pints shy of his 10th gallon when he had to stop giving blood.
I am going to be cremated, as is Bullet, so yeah, anything that is worth using, take it. What the heck do I need it for once I'm dead?

I would donate blood if they'd take it, but I was in England during the mad cow scare and they still won't allow me. I think they have mad paranoia disease.
As for body parts, use everything that's useable, give the rest to the med students to play with. When they're done, grind it up for some garden fertilizer. I'm sure I can get a new one if I need it.
For a loved one, my beloved says no, so it's no.

My body parts and those of my loved ones will be donated. I would hope that my heart could save some child's mommy or daddy, or a parent's child. One body could save so many lives. Those parts are no good to me when I'm dead. Too many people are dying while on the waiting lists.

Good for you, Shweet, but you didn't put any smilies in your post or
anything, and sometimes things don't always come across here as
clearly as we think they do when we type them, so it's hard for people

I would certainly hope that people who had good body parts would donate.
I am going to donate what ever part of my body that cancer does not destroy.
I will probably need a liver transplant before long and i would hope that someone who had a good one left it for people like me.

That sort of thing annoys me. Here in Australia, once you are dead you have no rights, and if your NOK doesn't want to allow organ donation, even if it was something YOU wanted, it won't happen. I think we can make a living will and put that in, but I'm not really sure what would happen if the NOK contested it. It stinks, we should be able to say what we want to have happen to our bodies, and OUR wishes should count, not those of others.
