she is 16. she is a poodle. she hasn't been eating much at all for the last week. she won't eat her food. only a treat here and there. she is drinking a lot though. she is the hub's dog. i've been with her for about 8 years. he doesn't want to take her to the vet. he says they will just tell us to put her down. how do you make a dog eat when she doesn't want to? is it a good sign that she is still drinking? any suggestions?

i'm worried about our little one...
It might be time for that most difficult decision of all... :-1
If you can tempt her with anything at all, it's worth trying. Some things
that might work: Scrambled eggs, boiled skinless chicken breast, cottage
cheese, chicken livers (cooked) canned cat food. My one old girl I had
would only eat that fake crab meat stuff you get that is a blend... so
that's what she got.
Hard to say whether the fact she's drinking is a good sign or not. She
might be having diabetic problems if the water intake is excessive.
How is her elimination? Seem pretty normal? How is her interest in
her surroundings?
I will tell you what I read a while back that seemed to make a lot of
sense... if the dog still has 3 things it likes to do in its' life... then
it's not time. That can be any 3 things, a ride in the car, sleeping,
playing with a favorite toy... anything.
Many, many hugs to you and your husband. Believe me I do know how
very hard this is.
Let me know if you think of any other questions or anything else at
all, I would like to help.
I will check early tomorrow morning, okay?

So did this just start last week, hotsauce? Was it totally abrupt, or did she start gradually going off her food? Please tell your husband that they will not just say "Put the dog to sleep" if you take her to the vets. She needs to be looked at.
I thought the same thing Val did when you mentioned the water intake. It's a very common symptom of diabetes.
SHe's 16, feed her whatever she'll eat. Just little bits at a time, though.
Is this a standard poodle? Mini?, teacup?
I'll check in as early as possible tomorow, too.

i'm worried about our little one...
Almost 9 years ago, just about the time I found out I was pregnant with my son, I went to the local shelter and found this beautiful rottweiler. I adopted her. She was 2 years old (or 4, depending on who you asked). When my son was born, she wa always in the same room he was, slept next to his crib, under his high chair, etc. When my son was about 18 months old, he once stood on her head to put his sippy cup on the dining room table. She stayed perfectly still, except for those oh-so-expressive eyebrows of hers.
A year ago tomorrow, my precious girl developed a profound limp. She was fine in the morning, but when I came home from running some errands she could not put any weight at all on her front leg. I was concerned. Just the day before she was running (well, as well as a 10 - or 12 year old rottweiler can) around my living room playing with the family beagle mix.
My daughter and I carried her to my van and drove her to the vet. We met my mom there. The vet took x-rays and the cancer was very evident to my eyes. The bone had calcified and was collapsing in upon itself. The vet asked me if I wanted to take a few days to think about the options. At this stage, amputation was the only option.
All I could think about was the look of humiliation on her usually proud face as she was carried down the 4 steps of the front porch. I asked the vet and the strongest medicine he had would just "take the edge off". I held her head in my lap and bathed her face in my tears as I said good-bye to my best friend.
I tell you this for 2 reasons. The first is rather selfish - she has been gone a year on Saturday and I miss her so very much. The second is - no matter how hard it may be to say goodbye to such a dear friend, to keep her if she is ill or in pain that can not be fixed is not the kindest thing.
Talk to your husband again. She could just need a good teeth cleaning. But if it is worse, doesn't he owe it to his friend to make her passing as painless as possible?

Hotsauce is she on soft food? If her teeth ache (which at 16 it is not uncommon) she will stop eating. So like Val suggested some good soft foods.

omg...i'm at work...you guys are making me cry all over myself.
update: last night she ate about a 1/4 of an egg and several crumbled up treats. the treats are still the hard kind...they are bland...for older dogs. is this how it goes then? when they get really old they just stop eating? should we just try and get her to eat anything...like the eggs then...until she doesn't want them anymore? then take her in...to...you know...do that thing? and no, i don't think she is enjoying much in life. i mean she comes over and sits by us. and stands when we get home...but she can't see out of one eye...she can see a little out of the other. she can't hear. it is just sumbishing sad. she does have a great smeller! she has always liked ice cream and chicken...hahaha...i brought home ice cream last night and her lil' nose was up in the air. i'm going to talk to the hubs again tonight. he gets very upset though...it is just bad. i don't know what to do.

Don't cry.
It may not be life threatening. But avoiding the vet so that he can keep her longer could make it that way! As mentioned before, it could be something as simple as sore teeth - a very easy fix though it may be a bit costly because of her age.
But even if it is bad, putting her to sleep is better then making her suffer.
I will keep you and yours in my prayers.

that is what i have been debating about. if it is best to just go ahead and feed her ANYTHING...i guess we have come to that point. i don't know.
what happened to your dog that was on the fake crab meat? did you lose her long after she started eating only that? did she ever return to "normal" food?

Only thing I can offer is if the Vet says baby is in pain... well then.... eternal sleep may be a good choice.

Be easy on your husband... I know you know this already but this is an
incredibly hard time for him. Good for you for having the strength to call
and then tell him.
My old dog never went back to eating regular food. She didn't last too
long, but she had cancer in her lungs.
16 is a ripe old age (for your girl) and I'm sure her life was happy as it could be.
You never know, the vet might have some ideas for a good life a little
longer. Sometimes steroid therapy will give them an appetite.
I am glad BR mentioned about giving her little bits of stuff, I should have
caught that and didn't. She surely only needs very small amounts of
anything. They go back to being like puppies, can't handle very much.
I'm sorry I had to work some today or would have replied earlier.
Please, after the appt. would you let us know what the vet says?

yes! i will let you know as soon as i can. thanks so much for you concern, ladies. you all rock! I GOT HER TO EAT CHICKEN TONIGHT! she was like the old stevi dog. i stopped and got her some chicken breasts. i boiled them and hand fed her little bites. i've been feeding her every three hours...just a bit since i got home. she even jumped up when i got the hub's food together. he was so happy...she was so happy...it was just awesome. we all needed that. i know we may get really bad news tomorrow...but it was nice to see a little spring in her step. we plan on having a really good time with her tonight.
may be a bit after the appt. hard to get on here during the weekend. thanks again, for all of your very kind words and suggestions. from the bottom of my heart...thanks so much. you all understand. amazing.

one more thing...just so you will know how very much hubs loves her. when we started living together...eight years ago. i was umm...jealous of the dog. i know. i suck. I LOVE HER NOW! but i said to him..."i think you love that dog more than me!" and he said...with the straightest face you have ever seen..."well, kim, i've known her a lot longer than i have known you".
i've been thinking of little stories like that all night.

I'm looking at the dates and times of the posts here, has she been to the vet, or is that still tomorrow?? I'm so concerned to hear what has happened, what the vet said.
Great news that you got her to eat a bit of chicken. This could be so many things, I just don't want to make any guesses till we hear what the vet says. Keeping fingers crossed.
I don't have to go to work till 8 Saturday, so I'm going to be on here constantly, I want to hear some good news. :-6 :-4

BR you made me puddle up with your concern. with all that is going on in your life...to be worried about my little doggie...well that is just remarkable.
GOOD NEWS GUYS!! they did a ton of tests and all of her organs are working fine. no signs of cancer...diabetes...nothing. she had some tummy troubles a few years back. we had to change her food at that time. doc gave her some stuff for her tummy, some fluid injections, antibiodics, and we have this stuff to rub on her gums (she thought she might have an infection from maybe some bacteria on her teeth). she is now on a home cooked diet of chicken and rice and she LOVES IT.
the doc said she expected almost a new doggie by monday! she was very optimistic! stevi is already prancing around a little bit. she has several medications to take for the tummy troubles...we will see how the next few days go.
we may only have a while with her left...it is just so good to know for certain that she isn't in pain. and we found something she can eat. it was TOTAL misery watching her just get weaker.
Thank you again for all of your concern and suggestions. i heart ya! :-4
oh, and on a side note...the hubby hugged me when we got home and said i was the very best. he thanked me for being so strong and i told him i understood him being so nutty.
all is well!

Well, saucie, dogs have always been one of my passions and the thought of an old-timer who's such a loved companion always gets to me, especially when they're hurting. To be able to help, even in a small way, makes me feel better. So it's purely selfish reasons I show my concern. :yh_rotfl
Seriously, I'm so glad you found answers. 16 years is a good long life for a dog, that speaks of how well you have taken care of her.
And good on hubby, too, for admitting you were right. A good day all around. I'm glad to hear no major problems were found. Give your puppers a hug from me. :-4

I woke this morning to Stevi either having a seizure or a stroke. She couldn't walk. When she did walk she ran as fast as she could into furniture...it was terrible. She was crying non stop. We took her to the vet first thing. They thought she might have many things (tumor, seizure disorder, etc.). We put her to sleep. It has been a very hard, horrible day. Enjoy your little friends. They are so precious. I'm glad we had a few more months with her. Like I posted before...it was all of you that encourged me to make the vet appt against my hub's wishes. That worked out so well. It gave us a few more happy months with her. Thanks.

Oh, Sauce, I'm so sorry. It seems as though many members are losing their pets lately. So very sad, but your 16 years with her will be memories you will treasure forever.
I believe that dogs DO go to heaven, and right now, she's romping with new friends.

Oh Hotsauce, I am so sorry. I couldn't hardly click on this, I was very
afraid of what I would see.
Stevi is up in heaven with all the dogs I have known, and they are young
again and happy and without any pain. You and your husband loved her
and gave her the best possible life she could have.
I hope you and your husband can comfort each other right now. It is
a very sad time.
Many hugs to the both of you, I will keep you in my thoughts.
