I am feeling sad for the BF today, he is out of town at his uncle's funeral, serving as pall bearer.
Not fun.

It is absolutely blowing a gale here....after weeks of settled weather, all of a sudden we're getting the lot...rain, wind and a bit of sun. I guess that's spring in the UK for you...

randall sticking his nose in again,
When I first visited the USA on a merchant navy ship, the SS "ULYSSES" and started chatting with the repairs squads that came down to work in our engineroom whilst docked a Brooklyn Naval Yard, I was really startled to hear how little time they got off.
A few years before (1945) we had elected a :Labour Government into power and apart from nationalising the railways, coalmines, dock's and setting up a truly National Health Service - the country was bankrupt from WWII of which the US authorities and businesses took full advantage of by dictating many ignominious do and don't to us - "Or else we'll stop helping you."
The government would have been more sensible to wait a while to increase the largess in the treasury before taking on the war ravaged damage which needed repairing that HAD to be done.
However, one of the things they did was at first force the bosses to give us at least two week holiday a year and a few years later forced them to pay us during that two weeks.
That has now increased dramatically although the British still get the least holidays and have more working hours of any other country in Europe.
It may be a European thing, but I was still surprised visiting my relatives in San Pedro in 1965 to find out how little holidays they got. They wanted to get me to emigrate then and there and, as my cousin was the head of Local 57 it would have meant that I would even have instant employment along with a union card.
I balanced the the work against their living conditions. Even after years in the USA they still were no better off than their relatives back in Scotland - and certainly did not have free medical care.
So I turned my back on the idea and have no regrets - my daughter and family have just had two weeks holiday from Tampa with her inlaws in Sunderland and a skiing holiday in France - a hectic two weeks - and to top it all on the last day my son in law dislocated his shoulder skiing.
They had no time to come up north to visit us.
I worked very long hours in the British and other merchant navies. Sometimes more than 24 hours without a break when things went wrong - you can't telephone an electrician or plumber or a squad of engineers when you in the middle of the ocean/
BUT - WHEN I was home on leave - I was home. I didn't have the dread of a midnight telephone call telling me to come in suddenly to the office, factory or whatever - and that freedom I relished above all other things.
That, along with getting a better than average tour of the world in general made up for everything and the last thing I wanted to do was stop.
I was finally forced out with outdated British laws which still allow age discrimination.
The younger crew members wanted me to be there as I was often the only really experienced and fully qualified engineer they had ever seen.
Even the Masters, in the later years were sailing on what is known as dispensations. That meant they could sail as and call themselves captains on a second mates certificate.
One British Merchant Navy joke is that only the DTI or BOT and the POPE can grant dispensations.
God bless all,

Oh, and accidently, of course, knock your coffee on his shirt.....
then tell him to take it off and you'll dry it for him!
