People leaving animals behind...

Post by valerie »

This time it's horses. My Dad called me last night (he

lives in Idaho) people next to him (the house isn't close

but the pasture abuts Dad's) moved out and left EIGHT

horses in the pasture with NOTHING. Dad says it's mostly

mud. My brother-in-law came over and chopped ice out of

the pond so they could get water... Dad said he managed

to scrounge some hay for them (6 of those big round bales)

but they will be out again soon... he said the sheriff

came out and took info from him but so far nothing else

has happened... except... well, the people left 8 horses

behind, right? Well, it's 9 now... Dad said one of the

mares dropped "The prettiest little pinto filly you ever

saw"!!

How can people do that? How can they?

I belong to a military wives forum. I don't post there often because I get so sick of the whining. Maybe it is just me, but it seems like when I was an active duty wife - when our husband's were deployed we took care of business at home without all of the whining about missing our men.

Anywho.

I was just reading some old posts in the pet section and I was just disgusted!

This lady was talking about rehoming her dog. Her family went into a pet store and fell in love with a labradoodle puppy, so they bought it. With no consideration about training, where it came from or anything else. Now (well, then as this was last spring) she is mad because the puppy barks in it's crate in the middle of the night waking up the whole family! It gets into things, chews and such.

So she was going on about putting an ad in the paper and trying to sell the dog so that they could get some of the money back. Afterall, there is another ad there selling labradoodle puppies for $1800. If she can't make money off of her pup then she will be dropping it off at the local shelter!

I was stunned by how many people replied that they just took their pets to the local Animal Control when they couldn't keep them anymore!

We have a cat that has been left behind, I don't like him and don't encourage him to stay as he has faught my cat before but it is beyond me how anyone can just leave an animal behind.

Horses is horrible cause someone isn't going to just pick them up and adopt them out of pity.

Here we could call the S.P.C.A. and they would have a way to deal with the horses either a rescue group or something else.

Omg how can someone do that. I want a horse so bad, but right now cannot afford one. My pets are my babies, and I couldn't imagine leaving one of them behind.

The least they could have done was give them away or found a shelter. I know there are animal rescues for almost every animal.

You'd think.

I can understand being in dire financial straits or something, but there's

so many other things you can do. Call up Animal Control and say look, I

can't afford these any more.

My Dad wasn't sure what would happen as far as investigation, prosecution,

or what all, but he can certainly care for these horses, he has 5 fenced

acres and a barn nearing completion. I got a line on a horse rescue in

Oregon if it comes to that, and with Dad's 4 horse trailer and my sister's

2 they could transport them, too.

Aww Val I wish you and your dad luck. Sure beats letting them starve to death.

Val, it is really good to know that your dad is a good hearted man and took charge of the situation. Many people would have just assumed that someone else would take care of the horses or not even bother to give it a thought.

I too wish I was closer to the situation. I own horses and have a spare horse pen, but Michigan is a bit far.

It is odd how people think that if you have a farm, that you are automatically an animal rescue. Since I have lived here I have rescued a mule, three goats, 20 or so rabbits, a dozen cats, etc. I am just glad that it was me to be living here in order to take in these unwanted furry friends.

I had to find a home for my dog once... because the circumstances weren't my choice and I wasn't mature enough to have grown a full spine yet... (or else I would have had a Sit-in with my dog) it was extrememly painful... I still kept contact... he's my baby... I never got another pet without the full understanding of the entire household that I'd sooner drop one of THEM off at the shelter than abandon my pet, even in the nicest of homes. :-5
