Lives of animals
hey BSM---you have to do what you have to do!! i had a coral snake in my house, almost stepped on it barefoot. do i feel guilty i killed it? NO!! i had a 6 foot rattler on my doorstep and shot it with my gun. so what? i had an elderly neighbor about to visit and she would have been nailed. sometimes human life takes precedence. and i love animals too. it's the call of the wild and survival of the fittest. snake attacks you, snake dies.~~~~oh, you are right, reptiles somehow get less affection. but they aren't warm and cuddly. we have an alligator problem here. they kill people and poodles. poodles for lunch.:Dyummy. oh heck poodle lovers are going to yell at me.

Your story gave me shivers! Reminds me of some spider stories I have.
I wouldn't feel bad about killing it. I would feel big and couragous (sp) for having the guts to do it. I think if something is a threat to you, then it's ok. Example, a dog attack. I wouldn't think twice about shooting a dog if I thought it might attack me. If it were my own that I had for years....and say got old and mean....then I would take it to the vet to have 'put down'. Only because of my attachment to it.

I probably posted that in an ambien trance-soryy

Old age and treachery, is an acceptable response to overwelming youth and skill

Sorry snake lovers, but my opinion is this: Snakes are good for 3 things.
1.Boots
2.Belts
3.Purses
Would I have killed the snake? Heck no. I wouldn't get that close! I would have paid someone else to do it!
Feeling this way, imagine my life when my son's ball python was loose in the house for 3 days!

LOL--Yes. His dad bought him the snake for his birthday knowing how I feel about snakes. My revenge? I bought our daughter a rat knowing how hubby fears them! LOL

K, folks....it's a snake. I guess I can understand a momentary twinge of guilt over killing it, because it was just doing what snakes do. But, another thing snakes do is kill small dogs for their supper if they have the opportunity. Bringing PETA into the argument is pointless. Anyone with 4 functioning brain cells knows that PETA followers and supporters are nuts. Who gives a hoot what they think??
I have a cat that goes outside all the time. There are no snakes where I live, but if there were, and one was going after my cat, I would kill it. If my cat didn't kill it himself. (He's a big beast of a cat, and pretty tough, too.) It wouldn't occur to me to think about it. I would not feel guilty about it either. And that's coming from someone who owns snakes. I have 2 pythons and a boa right now. I feed the snakes so they don't need my cat for food. If one of them tried to kill my cat, I'd shoot it. Plain and simple. So, I guess you'd say I put the life of my cat above the life of my snakes. I've had my cat 12 years, and my snakes about 2 weeks. Maybe that has something to do with it. I don't have an emotional attachment to my snakes like I do with my cat. And I don't see it happening, either.

Killing things because they aren't cute and cuddly and bragging about it is wrong. We have moved into THEIR turf. They won't bother us without provocation. I would have done everything possible to save the snake. And yes we have a couple poisonous species here; Copperheads and timber rattlers. Save America- Hug a Snake.

"Save America- Hug a snake"???? This from the man who would leave America if only he could. Dave, sweetie, I OWN snakes. I am an animal lover to the core. I was not bragging about killing a snake. (I brag when I kill deer, not snakes :yh_rotfl ) But yeah, damn straight, he should have killed it. He tried to "relocate" it, he tried to call animal control, which was closed. (Apparently, animals only cause problems Monday through Friday). I'd do the same, I wouldn't apologize for it, and I wouldn't feel guilty about it. And if you think snakes don't bother anyone unless provoked, you haven't studied one single thing about them.

Hence the rat population has surged. Sure I'd be spooked if I found a poisonous (wouldn't know either way by sight so I'd assume every snake I saw WAS poisonous!) snake in my house but I would do everything to keep from killing it. Snakes don't chase people, or stalk people or hunt people. If they are around your home you have rat/mice problems. If a non-native species like a cat is devoured by one I'm on the snakes' side! Though I LOVE cats and have a 17 year old one! I'm glad you have snakes BR and aren't out on the lookout to kill as many as you can find! In the West and SW, suburbs are stealing ages old snake habitat. People think they are chasing them! That their numbers are growing! Nope. WE are encroaching on them and their primary food sources are still there, we add the pets as a bonus! It is our responsibility to keep our homes from being appealing to snakes. Humans must learn we aren't doing enough in this aspect.

I have read somewhere about that Oklahoma rattler massacre. THIS I definitely do not agree with. A mass slaughter of huge numbers of snakes, for what?? Yeah, that is SICK. Isn't it some sort of so-called "festival"?? I only remember bits and pieces.
No, I don't go out to "hunt" snakes. Where's the fun in that? But just like anything else, if it threatens my home, property or loved ones, and it's legal to do so, I will kill it. Snakes, people, whichever. (Let's NOT turn this thread into a gun control debate!)
I would NOT however be on the snakes side if it went after my pets. Sorry 'bout it's luck. I do see the need for snakes, as vermin control they are very important. But humans come first. As much as I'd like to see a world where all species can co-exist peacefully and thrive, it just ain't gonna happen.

amount of things they do that I am glad to have them around for, but
other than that, yeah, serious wackos.
They lost me years ago when they were outside the state fair protesting
against the rodeo animals "abuse"... saying that the rigging used for the
bulls "pinched" their genitals. They obviously know NOTHING about the
bull riding. Bulls are EXTREMELY expensive animals who "work" about
8 seconds a week, and guess what, stock contractors want to keep them
around to make baby bulls when they retire!! Does PETA really think
anyone is going to risk pinching the animal? They know nothing of the
bull's anatomy, flank cinch doesn't come anywhere near anything important!
WHEW!! Done with that rant.
I would kill a snake if I had to, but only then. I love animals but I think
WE are animals, too, and Mother Nature will probably sort us all out at
some point!! That's not to say we couldn't tighten up our acts a little.
For years, my commute involved about a ten minute drive on extremely
curvy, windy country roads, a bunch of us hit all KINDS of things with
our cars, skunks, deer, raccoon, you name it but guess what folks?
It happened EVERY year. I never saw the rate go down.

I agree, Val. There is a line to walk. I believe animals should not be abused, starved, beaten, over-bred, or neglected. I believe that the ASPCA and animal "cops" have a really tough, and under-appreciated job. The ASPCA and animal cruelty unit in New York alone answer somewhere in the neighborhood of 4,000 calls a month. And there's 15 agents. They do a good job, and the punishments for some of the people they arrest are just way too lenient.
On the flip-side: I don't think animals should be revered to the point that PETA preaches. If there is a way to cure cancer or AIDS or some such similar horrific disease and the price of that cure is a few dogs or cats or chimps or whatever, well, call me harsh, but it's a price I can live with. There's a line. Cruelty because you're a sick bastard and get off on it is reprehensible, and you should go to jail for it. Medical testing and research is important. Sounds hypocritical, and maybe it is, but it's just my opinion.

An awesome org. for wildlife is the Wildlife Conservation Soceity. www.wcs.org
There are so many different kinds of non-profit org that have their good and bad points, I just haven't found one that I agree with 100%.
As for snakes, they keep my mice population down! Good snakes!!:)
