Dog vaccinations

Post by Jcas »

Here is Aussie we are told we need to vaccinate for parvo etc.every 12 months. I have read that doing it so often only lowers their immunity to the vaccine, that in other parts it is 5 yearly.

We have tried to put some light on this with the local vets, but naturally they won't buy into it.

What is the standard in other countries? yearly, 5 yearly etc.?...:-6

At this point, it is done yearly in the U.S. also - the exception being the 3 year rabies shot.

There are several concerns with the yearly schedule... one being injection

site sarcoma.

Some forward-thinking vets will allow pet owners to "opt-out" of the

schedule at a certain point. Tamsen's vet suggested this a few years

back. There is a test called a "titer" that will measure the antibodies

in your pet's blood. And vaccinate accordingly.

Tamsen had cancer and the vet recommended not putting the additional

stress of vaccinations on her immune system. The vet also wrote a letter to the city

so that Tamsen didn't have to have her rabies shot this year.

This is NOT the way to go for all pet owners, however. Above all, talk

to your vet. He or she can work with you to plan the best course for

your pet's health and safety.

I know several people who do titer tests. They swear by them and while they are not vaccinating every year - titer tests are NOT cheap.
