what do your guts tell you? do you trust your gut? i do. here are a couple examples...tell yours! susan smith, the SC mother who drove her two boys into the lake and blamed a black kidnapper...i knew she was lying in her first appearance on tv. i told a friend four days before the fact that those babies would be found in the car underwater. he still calls me a witch. ..chuck stuart in boston...9 month pregnant wife shot in the head and he is wounded...everyone in boston believed him and there were serious racial problems. i said to my boston PD friends that chuck did it, why in hell would a shooter kill a 5' tall, 9 month pregnant woman and not the man who was the real danger/threat?? well they all laughed at me until chuck stuart jumped off the mystic river bridge. he did it. i knew he did it. SO...do you go with your gut? mine never fails me.
guts
I didn't know Susan had anything to do with her boys deaths until it was announced and I was devestated
Same for Scott Peterson, never started suspecting him until I heard about the affair/lies.
I usually give the benefit of the doubt, I am not cynical or imediately suspicious...
I have had gut instincts about people I have met in real life and knew something is not quite right with them and it has turned out to be true.
However, for the most part I am a trusting individual and try to look for the best side in a person.
Did you suspect Ed Smart? or Richard Ricci in Elizabeth's case?

the smart case had some weirdness that will never be explained. there are some odd family dynamics which were covered up pretty well. those people have money. but none of that had to do with her kidnapping. ricci was a small-time nobody dirtbag. and so was his wife.just common jailbirds, both of them. i did not think he did it. but i will say this, that case was one of very few that surprised the hell out of me, she was alive. one in a million. the odds were against it. one thing that will always bother me...john walsh tried to talk with the smarts and help out, he was soundly rejected.

NO --- Professionally, I simply can not go with my gut, I'm an excellent analyst and have on occasion been accused of following my gut because I can see things others cannot. It's really not gut, the mind is a wonderful thing that stores nearly everything your body sensors "see", the trick is be able to focus, and let it work.
I wish I could do gut, and am envious of those that can.
News stories, I'm too cynical to expect the truth, had too many times when I knew the truth from first hand knowledge, in none of these cases was the news story correct.
guess I'm just a detail weanie.

Old age and treachery, is an acceptable response to overwelming youth and skill

you get a feeling from the start. Susan belongs where she is, the guy in Boston, from the start it was him? it is an all-too common occurence in this day and age, where the man doesn't want the responsibilty or he is gay? either way he should'nt have testicles, if they were cut off, those women would be alive? Susan should have had something to keep her brain from killing for her own needs.
Everyone has these on their face? TULIPS.

I agree with both Der Wulfe and lc. I remember recently having met somebody who blurted out to me that he would kill somebody. I left it at that because it felt that way. Didn't want to roil the waters.
There was young drug pusher that had a proclivity to using a gun and scaring the beejeezus out of people. His favourite form of using the gun was to whack people in the head with it. People were afraid of him and if he said that he was coming for you then you had better believe that he would show up and do his misdeeds.
One night he showed up to terrorize some people that had owed him some money of some deal gone awry and he wasn't happy. This time he showed up with a knife and was disarmed. There were to be no beatings that night. Instead the fellow that I told you about earlier decided, when violence broke out, to use the knife on the pusher. Stabbed him multiple times and they stuffed his body in a dumpster on the other side of town.
Because of the character of the pusher they were given sentences ranging up to 5 years. It was sad to see these young people being jailed but you can't just kill somebody and that's it. They were from the neighbourhood and I knew them all as being good people.
I trust my instincts but I believe that Der Wulfe is quite correct when he says that the mind stores evry piece of information that it gets. I would think that lc is reacting from the same place but feels it in her gut.

i appreciate Der Wulf's message...an analyst or engineer or scientist must rely on so much more than a gut instinct of course...facts, math, physics, i know, my Dad was a scientist and prof. at MIT. i often listened to his (incomprehensible to me) lectures, and i typed his books. i agree the mind stores everything. it is that experience i think, that creates the "gut" instinct. in my case, my focus has not been one of exact science, my entire life i have focused on the criminal mind and reading people. at the risk of seeming self-congratulatory, it is my talent, i'm good at it. but there is no scientific or measurable method to my gut. it's subtle. it includes everything from body language to tone and choice of words, but not in a conscious effort. what i do in an interview or in listening to a suspect or witness is strictly indefinable. but probably based on all the information i have gathered in my lifelong study of criminology, and more importantly, people. it's an esoteric business.

There's been a coupla times I knew something in my gut when there were
many who didn't around me... and then other times when I didn't get it.
One time I did was when Clinton went on t.v. and said "I did NOT have sex
with that woman... Ms. Lewinski..." and I went "Wrong answer" kinda like
me fears he doth protest too strongly. But I sure can't say I was alone in
that, although there WERE people who bought it hook line and sinker.
That case a few years back where the college girl claimed she was abducted?
I called that one IMMEDIATELY. How, I dunno, just that "gut" I guess!
