General Motors guilty of Discrimination?

My fiance works for General Motors. When we get married I will, obviously, have his medical insurance. The subject has come up several times recently, and I have found out something that I want your opinions on. General Motors allows it's gay employees to extend their insurance benefits to their "life partners" while unmarried straight couples do not have this option.

This is the first I'd heard of this. Have any of you heard of this? Am I nuts for seeing this as blatant discrimination? This is NOT a slam on gay couples, or their right to be married or not. Please let's try to avoid that. Do you see this as discrimination?

I had heard of this before, but I'm surprised to hear that GM would extend

any benefits for gay couples. That seems to be a little more forward

thinking than I expected from a company like that.

As to the unmarried straights, well, they DO have an option the gays don't

and that is to legally marry. Soooo, I find it kinda hard to put down GM for

the way they've decided to do handle this.

Usually after you acquire common law status you can apply for coverage as a spouse. As Valerie pointed out, gay couples do not have the option to marry and it is quite amazing that GM is broad minded enough to allow them coverage at all. I think it is wonderful. Is common law not considered a spouse where you are? If you haven't lived together long enough to be common law then it is not surprising that you are not covered yet.

Many major U.S. corporations now provide medical benefits for Gay Couples, in fact, it's been around at least 13 years that I know of.

I think Wal*Mart just added coverage to gay partners. Don't want to start a rumor. Did anyone else see this story?

With my employer if you add someone to your insurance you have to show that you had a divorce to get them off and get someone else on the policy.

Other wise single people would be putting on thier brothers and sisters.

Sometimes I think indiscrimination is worse then discrimination.

Here, in ontario, canada, after you live with a girl for three months she is entitled to get on your benefits

I think in the US it varies by state. Some state allow coverage for any life partner, gay or other wise. It also depends on your Insurance company as well.
