I cannot believe this is even being considered. I've been going to this zoo since I was a little girl. I have taken my son at least once every summer for 16 years. I will be so sad if they close my zoo. At least it sounds like everyone is trying their best to keep it open.

kind of screams "it's all about money" Never mind the hours of entertainment you get with a trip to the zoo. Gosh I can't imagine it really. I love our zoo here.

All about the money? The city would lose out on over $700,000 of funding if there is no zoo. Seems a pretty good incentive to me to keep it open.
It really will suck if it closes.
The Detroit zoo was the first one in the history of zoos to release it's elephants to a wildlife preserve strictly for humanitarian reasons.

Sorry to hear about your zoo BR. We don't even have a zoo, and I don't even remember the last time I went to one. Hopefully all the support and historical ties, will stop them from deciding to close it down, especially if it continues to attract people each year.
Seems that so many places today are being knocked down to make way for shops or even more houses. Real shame really.

Chris, you need to get to San Diego, USA and see THEIR zoo! Talk about an incredible place.
Keeping my fingers crossed here, the yearly trip to the zoo has been tradition in my family for so long, I can't imagine not having it there. The tigers that are kept there were rescued from a dope house in Detroit where they were being kept chained in the basement and fed canned cat food.

We have a program on our tv, about the daily goings-on at a large zoo in our country, and they are all the time bringing in all kinds of creatures that have suffered at the hands of others, it's really touching.
Well funnily enough whilst we were in California, we were tempted to visit San Diego and see their zoo, because I hear that it is supposed to be phenomenal. Hopefully the next time we are over there we will be able to go. I've always wanted to be able to see some of the more exotic and rarer kinds of animals that zoo's have. It's great that the people working in them put so much time and dedication into looking after there well-being.
