My sisters Puppies

Post by Betty Boop »

My sister has two beautiful 10 week old weimaraner puppies.

The only downside is that their stools are very loose - she's having to take them out every hour!

I wondered if the food they are having maybe too high in protien for them, they are eating a dried preparation formulated for puppies with a protein level of 30% and they don't get fed any scraps.

Any advice appreciated!!

You've got it yourself already, I think. Of course I don't know a whole

lot but I'd quit with the higher protein puppy food right off the bat,

it can give them runs definitely. Buy a good quality kibble for adults.

Let me do a little research on protein levels... but I think maybe around

23/24 % is going to be more like it.

They don't get SCRAPS per se, which is great, but do you know if they

get things like chewey rawhide treats? Rawhide will give puppies the poops

quicker than anything!!

She might not be able to cut down on the bathroom breaks all that much

for a while, puppies little systems are short... but she WILL be able to

achieve firm poops!!

Thanks Val, I thought the protien was very high, I don't think they have any rawhide treats, I'll check tomorrow.

The bathroom breaks were every four hours a week ago, they changed their food as one of the pups seemed to continually be a bit loose and now it's just made matters worse!!

There's part of the problem right there. An abrupt change in a dog's diet at any age can cause loose stool.

Is she feeding them 4 or 5 small meals a day? What sort of treats, if any, are they getting?

Just out of personal curiosity, what made her decide on Weimeraners?

Yes, they're getting four meals a day, I don't think they get any treats.

When she said they changed their food I did ask if they introduced it gradually, but no they didn't!!

I have no idea why they chose this breed, I don't know much about them, sure they look lovely but the little I've read about them they're quite high maintenance.

I think they may have intentions of breeding them, they have two bitches.

OK, tell her that's really tough on the system to swap up foods abruptly. These dogs are very high-energy, and somewhat difficult to train. Firm, consistent DAILY training sessions are a must.

Betty, please, PLEASE tell them not to breed these dogs. Why do they want to breed them? There are so many reputable breeders out there and probably 1,000 times more irreputable breeders. Just because a person has a purebred, registered AKC dog does NOT mean they have even the beginnings for any success of any type. What sort of experience do they have that they are considering this?

They have no experience, I'm keeping my fingers crossed it won't happen.

They had a horse once, couldn't be ridden, so they put her to stud. The result stands in one of their fields, a beautiful living ornament.

Hi Betty I wanted to check back in and say that although of course

opinions vary (;) ) it looks like protein content between about 22% and

25% is best for puppies.

And I was totally remiss in not asking about vet checks, the pups could

have worms contributing to their problem. Diarrhea in young pups

is pretty dangerous, it dehydrates them so quickly. I think at this point

a trip is order.

And since I'm sure my feelings on the subject of breeding are no secret,

I'll just keep quiet on that!

I walked the pups earlier today and am happy to report that their stools were firm.

They were quite well behaved apart from continually jumping up at people, something I kept saying (to my sister!) they have to stop. They are sitting on command and I urged my sister to enroll in a dog training class.

I also said I think they should see the vet, I've pointed out that they've picked up these dogs and they have no evidence of vaccinations, worming etc.

I also found out that they saw the mother but not the father and I told them I didn't think that was wise, they should have seen both and the full litter of pups.
