Do you suppose that non-smokers might have an agenda??????

They go to restaurants and demand tables in smoking so the smokers have to sit in non-smoking and can't smoke.............. :D

Thats a joke, right? I didnt understand it at first because I am a non smoker and I sure dont want to sit in smoking area. There is a restaurant or truck stop that is open 24 hours has three dining rooms and the non smoking is at the rear. The first two are smoking so you have to walk thru the two smoking ones to get to non smoking and it really smells bad in the first two.

Yes. The smilie grin was the clue.

I just got to thinking about it. If you have options, it is always "non-smoking", "smoking", or either........... So if you wanted to manipulate it (in the restaurants I've been in the smoking is a small section), you could take your non- smoking party into that area, hopefully fill it up with non-smokers and then, where are these smokers going to go............... they will either wait, go to the bar, or sit in non-smoking and not pollute my air. Eventually, everywhere will be smoke free, but till then -- we could tip it in our favor. :D :D :D

Food for thought........The principle of reciprocity means:

you get what you give.

The manner, style, and level you use to engage people will determine how they respond to you. Don't ever take someone else's inventory if you're not willing to take your own.

why have they not perfect a hot chocolate poweder that mixes well with hot water.... the concept is lost on me when you have to premix with milk a wee bit in the bottom then add water, by then it is lukewarm chocolate... I just don't get it....

Well I don't know if this is any help or not, but I know that there is something on post configurations if u go to 'edit options' in your settings. Perhaps you can change it there?

I changed it to be that way Chris as it saves time searching the threads...I just wondered if anyone else had done the same. :)

Uncle Kram wrote: My Castles cracking up

Millions of pounds could be needed to safeguard the future of Tamworth Castle, it was revealed this week.

Teams of structural engineers have been employed to monitor cracks in the ancient mound or motte on which the 900-year-old Castle stands.

And experts are also keeping a close watch on cracks in the oldest part of the Castle, its Norman tower.

These are expected to be repaired once approval has been granted by English Heritage.

"The mound looks as if it is moving towards Silver Street," Cllr Brian Beale told the Herald.

"If there is a problem on the mound - and things do look as if they are moving - then you are probably talking millions of pounds to get it shored up."

The artificial motte is at least as old as the original brick structure, which was built by the Normans in the 1100s, but is reputed to have been created by Ethelfleda to support wooden fortifications as early as 913.

Specialist groundwork engineers are monitoring the large and apparently worsening cracks which have appeared in the path around the top of the ancient monument. They are expected to report back in the autumn.

The Castle's tower has been declared out of bounds, meaning visitors can no longer go inside the oldest part of the landmark, and flags can no longer fly from its ramparts.

Experts who specialise in heritage buildings have also been employed to complete a survey on the entire fabric of the building.

"The Castle is continually deteriorating as old buildings do. It's suffered many years of not being looked after to the degree that it should have been. There has been a reduced expenditure on maintenance," Cllr Beale added.

"One of the reasons we are looking to give the Castle over to a charitable trust is so they can apply for the external funds needed for repairs that are not available to the council."

Chairman of the Friends of the Castle, Steve Greenhall, said: "We are worried because obviously we want the Castle to stand as long as possible, but I'm glad that the council is looking at this and trying to do something."

"I understand, though, that a trust would not be in place for another two years. If these cracks in the mound are getting worse, then they might not have two years."
 Does Arnold know about this? he's a stonemason, y'know. He may have suggestions.

ArnoldLayne wrote: Well , without boring everyone into a stupor, a lot of problems concerning the conservation of ancient buildings, lie in the materials used over the years of so called conservation. Modern materials instead of traditional ones leave the buildings unable to move and breath (ie cement based mortar/renders used instead of lime based materials) hence masonry cracks and splits.

Masonry tip No 1..... mortar seperates and holds apart the bricks/masonry, not stick them together and so should be "weaker" than the masonry

The problems with Tamworth Castle seem to lie much deeper, however and originate deep in its foundations. Its all too common to see such "too little ,too late"

Ok you can wake up now, back to the fun :wah:

Lesson 2 tomorrow :D

Question for you.... if you make cement with salt water is your structure more liable to derteriorate quickly as in the salt will promote rust on things like the rebar? (From the inside out perhaps) Serious question really.

ArnoldLayne wrote: Minks, The question of concrete is a whole different science and not one I'm familiar with.

However there is a phenomenon called concrete cancer which seems to be prevalent now. This is due to a chemical reaction in the concrete and not to do with the rebar. The cancer would occur even if the rebar were not present

I have to say I do not know about the reaction of salt in concrete but natural salts occur in in certain bricks as an impurity and these leech out over time

I will try to research a bit :D

awww thanks Arn, it has to to with a myth about a castle in Jamaica, they say it broke down due to Salt water being used in the making of the concrete and the rebar is rusting inside the concrete.... others argue it is false that the rust is due to the salt water spray that just leaches into every thing..... A rich American tried to lure his bride to Folly Estate he built if for her on the most gorgeous piece of land in Jamaica, but it deteriorated incredibly quick and he never got to take her there. It is a mere skeleton now and this was only 50 years ago.
