America Online News Service is reporting today (1/31/06) that an ex-postal worker shot and killed 6 people at a Goleta, California mail facility. This has been happening for decades. Why are these workers pushed to this extreme? Or is it all the fault of the workers that do the shooting?

Why are they going postal?
I used to live in Edmond, OK and used the post office that Patrick Henry Sherrill killed all of those people in the late 1980's. They have a beautiful bronze statue in front of the post office dedicated to the victims. So sad.
I have to wonder what's with these people that will do something like this. It isn't just postal workers, but they seem to be the ones that get the most attention. I heard a story awhile back about some guy that used to work as a stock broker of some sort went into his office and did the same thing.
What gets to me is that there are jobs more stressful than working at the post office and you don't see those employees shooting everyone. Is the post office really that bad of a place to work? Maybe they should give people that apply for those jobs some sort of a test to see if they can handle whatever type of stress is involved in that job. I'm sure they do some screening already.

I was told that the postal service emplyes some humiliating practices in disciplining employees. I heard they sometimes make a person stand in a box half the day and like that. I can see how someone might lose it.
And I do know that they have a practice of having a person follow along and watch the carrier several times a year and they do that all day to see how well they do their job.
In my job there were post office employees at the train depot unloading cars of mail. There was a huge rush at Christmas time and they were allowed a certain number of minutes per 1 foot of mail in the car. They do have a lot of pressure.

I agree the person who blows up is responsible. I think they do hold them responsible. They have trials and go to jail and I am sure some have been executed. :driving:

It's the fault of the worker. It was a choice that was made. Why do some look for external causes for individual actions?
Pushed to far???? That's a cop out.

I heard some radio reports today that said she was a former employee that was recently fired and that she was being treated for mental illness. We don't know yet if the Postal Service knew of her illness, but the surely knew she had been fired. One question I have is how did she gain access to the facility if she was fired. Since Sept. 11, 2001 and the anthrax attacks, the post office has tightened their security, even for employees.
