Hello everyone,
Recently i was in a conversation with someone and i made a comment that Jewish people are probably a bit greedy with their money.
I have now been told that my comment was anti semitic and were very offended by what i said.
Was i in the wrong to make such a comment?
Or do people nowadays scream discrimination at the drop of a hat?:-5

One could certainly do worse, but I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if some people got offended if I went around saying things like that.
My Jewish comment.
Yes, it was anti-semitic and you were wrong to make such a comment.

Oh I don't know, Eddie. How many greedy Jews do you know?
Are they greedy because they wouldn't give you the price you wanted in a business deal or because they keep bugging you to pay back that loan you defaulted on?
I'm sure you're quite justified in your opinions because of the extensive research you've done, right?
Or is it because your Jewish yourself and since any penny you spend has your thumbprint on it from squeezing it so tight, you figure your cousins are the same way?
I noticed you didn't list your country of origin or ethnicity. Could you let us know, so we'll know how to view all your countrymen?

it's bigoted comments like that that made mein kampf such a bestseller.

Well i have only heard in the past that people of the jewish faith were greedy types who always want "something for nothing..."
For example in the film "The Life of Brian" there was a scene where he says "you have to haggle" which gave me the impression of a greedy person.
I am not jewish myself (or have any jewish relatives) and have never met any jewish people either, so my own first hand experience has still yet to happen.

Yeah... good point.

Jewish people are renowned for their business prowess and work ethic therefore they have historically been succesful. This has generated jealousy from the less successful. Being careful with money is not just the preserve of the Jewish people....i believe the Scots are pretty 'canny' too !

Well, first off, "The Life of Brian" is probably not the best documentary to base opinions on. It's been exposed as 100% fiction. :guitarist
We have one or two Jewish people here. Maybe they can introduce themselves to you.
You've yet to finish school, is that right?

That, by almost any definition, is an anti-Semitic remark.
You chose to call Jews "greedy". If you wanted to buy into the stereotype, you could have said Jews were good money managers, accomplished business people, thrifty, etc.
But, no...
You chose to use an insulting, unflattering, volatile, hateful word .
So, yes, you made an anti-Semitic comment, and I'm pleased that you were called on it by your peers.

Yes the Scots are very shrewd with their money!
I have been a witness on numerous occassions
Example 1. Someone in Glasgow tells me down the telephone "your cheques in the post lad..." and that went on for seven months, till i sent the bailiffs round to his office!
Example 2. When i was a student i had a pt job doing market research then a scot living down in Somerset employed six of us (including me). No one ever got paid from him, except me, because i shouted the loudest.
Example 3. Another company in Glasgow thought they could get out of paying when i did a job for them in good faith, until i sent them the final demand.
Now as a serial entrepreneur one of my business ventures is "National Cash" which specialises in "cash loans" and i could be here all night telling you all the experiences (or excuses) i have had trying to get people to "pay up" (and some of my customers even have jewish names) but i might offend some of the more sensitive people on this website, so i will not bother. :-6

I dont think thats a drop of the hat. Its not the end of the world but its a part of the problem. Its the kind of thing that perpetuates a seperateness between classes, creeds, religions and peoples of all backgrounds, ethnic or otherwise.
Think about it....
We all have a duty and responsibility to make this planet as liveable for one another as we can. It would be seamless if we all put more effort into our presentations for lack of a better description.

Yes it was a comment that should have been kept to yourself.
First what do you base your comment on ??? facts ??? or just hearsay..??
If you thought it to be wrong to say, you should not have said it..!!
"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" usually will keep you out of trouble in my experience.

bigotry and stupidity are synonymous to me. the one always is found with the other. it's been explained to you, in quite simple english, why your comment is offensive. thus far, it appears not to have sunk in.
wave goodbye eddie. there's many other forums out there. i'm sure any of a number of them would be happy to have you.

You know what, on the contrary, every Jewish person I've met and or been friends with are not the least bit cheap or tight with their money.
This is what I do not get....the hatred toward Jewish people. I have never met a Jewish person who I have not liked very much.
There is an Egyptian forum where I post also, and there are a lot of Arab/Egyptians who cannot stand Jews. But I beg to differ. :-5 :-3

There are all kinds of Jews just like there are all kinds of Christians. Albert Einstein was Jewish as is David Berkowitz, the "Son of Sam" serial killer. Ben Roethlisberger is Jewish as is Jack Abramoff... just to name a few famous Jews, good and bad.
