Daffy, you say you are concerned about the kids getting stick for living with a gay couple. I can tell you from my personal experience that kids will get stick for living in any unusual circumstance. I spent several years in a children's home. I don't know if the UK has an equivalent, but it is a group foster home with several cottages on a 'campus.' The Baptist Children's Home in Monroe, Louisiana, had over 100 foster kids. I was one. We got a tremendous amount of flack (stick) from the other kids because no family wanted us. The fact that it was untrue was also unimportant.

More importantly, when you are one of over 100 kids, nobody has time to teach, to challenge, to love, to spend one-on-one time together. We learned from each other. It's a bit tough to learn to be an adult from an older kid.

I would have welcomed the chance to be in a loving foster home with a couple - gay, straight, friends, whatever - who could give me the individualized guidance I needed.

Sure, give heterosexual couples first dibs. Absolutely agree 100%! But for the kids that's left over, a poor substitute is better than none at all.

Those that are against gay couples raising children generally make some wrong assumptions.

1----That the child will become gay due to exposure

2----That the child will grow up dysfunctionally

Neither is correct as proven by those that have been raised by gay couples.

I have personal gay friend couples that have reared their children very well and the kids are now married adults with good careers

How about the number of children that are being raised by a natural parent that was once in a hetero marriage, is divorced, and remarried now into a gay relationship with a partner. There are lots of these situations.

I agree with your preferences. I have the same ones. Not everyone has the foresight and sense of responsibility you have.

For those with no other way, the smaller family model - regardless how screwy - is better for society long-term than institutionalizing.

That is a bunch of hogwash! I know people (gay)who have raised unwanted children......I work with them, those kids today have given them grandchildren and I would just love to hear thier response to that nonsense that you speak.....how the hell do you know that all of this isn't God's plan.......maybe we are "all" being tested.

I think what is lacking, not just in your country but mine and everyone elses is not creativity but compassion. Not just that but non judgemental compassion, not qualified and reserved for the "worthy". Coupled with a willingness to live and let live without trying to tell everybody how they should be living and leaving them alone to make their own choices and find their way. Respect my way and I will respect yours. Enjoy the otherness in others and savour your own difference and be ready to be tolerant.
