How about a game of questions. I will start with a couple of questions and see if you can add to them. I may be asking for trouble on this one.:D

Why do we say someting is out of whack? What is a whack?

Why do "tug" boats push their barges?

Why do we sing "Take me out to the ball game?" when we are already there?

Why doesn't glue stick to the bottle?

If Webster wrote the first dictionary, where did he find the words?

ok your turn................

The trouble is, Mookey, is that the English language is too versatile. Try a different language like Latin or Ancient Greek.:)

Somebody was asking about the neck of the woods in another thread. Here's a good place, too.

Well made up Clancy. Meriam-Webster doesn't recognise it. Either that or you mis-spelt it as I pasted it across.:)

You're right Chonsi. But Dictionary.com doesn't provide a clue as to the pronunciation of the word.

If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would we ever know?

That's English for ya Minks. English was created so we could have an English version of the Holy Bible. Need I say anymore.

On the other hand, ol' Willy Shakehisspear had loads of fun with English when it first came out.

So the e after stros is actually pronounced then!

Beats Mary Poppins.

Cease to persuade, my loving Proteus.

Home-keeping youth have ever homely wits.

Were't not affection chains thy tender days

To the sweet glances of thy honoured love,

I rather would entreat thy company

To see the wonders of the world abroad

Than, living dully sluggardized at home,

Wear out thy youth with shapeless idleness.

But since thou lov'st, love still, and thrive therein -

Even as I would, when I to love begin.

But the collective noun for baboons is a 'flange' ...now I have a flange pedal at my feet {on the pedal board} ....and when I step on it , it doesn't sound like a baboon at all !.....

Sorry Clancy. You're just not playing it right. I didn't know the collective noun for a group of baboons is a flange. Fascinating. Because if a flange is trodden on in the right way, that's just what it sounds like.

Been there, done that, and it was brilliant. No flange of baboons could ever reproduce that.

So I've just discovered. Not covering up for myself, I invited Snooze to see. I stand straitly humbled. I feel really very rotten now.
