Rude People.........or are they?

Post by mominiowa »

My son and I were outside..He received a paint ball gun last year for Christmas and since he hasn't shot it to much, and it is 45 degrees today, we were in OUR back yard shooting at the wood pile...2 ladies were walking past and Rory had just run around the house to get more balls and one of the woman starting to talk to him.. I walked around the side with a smile and said, Oh HI...(More just to see who was talking to my son.one never knows) anyway-- the ladies then started to tell me how crazy of a mother I was to let my son play with guns...I was like???????-- I explained that it is a paint ball gun and it is not the high compression one- it is for a child and it is a pump action...Needless to say - she grumped away saying that my son would be the one in jail for parenting skills as my own....I in turn gave a smart A$$ comment of-- WELL where are your kids lady while your re out walking off your fat a$$---At least I am playing with mine and not walking with my prissy a$$ friends.......Get a life! My son was like ""WOW Mommy your mad!!""" was I so wrong... This is the second time this season that some one has me second guessing how we live...First was when I was harassed about my daughter going hunting at 13 and now this..People need to get a life....It seems to me that if you are involved in your kids lives...then that makes you a good parent. Its the kids who are left alone to figure out what to do next are the ones that get into trouble....Was I out of line?:-5

You were not out of line at all. These days some people are paranoid about guns and other weapons. Boys are boys and they like to play "army" type games. I don't care what kind of parent you are, even if you don't allow your kids to play with guns or weapons, boys will make a gun out of their peanut butter and jelly sandiwich if they have to. My grandson does. Almost everything he does is weapon related. Of course he knows about real guns and that they can kill, but we do not have real guns in the house nor do we ever use them, but he still pretends. Its natural. When he is older, perhaps we will get him paint ball, bee bee guns or other "children" type guns, but they will be supervised activities just like what you are doing. If they are supervised by an adult and taught the differences, thats what counts. Its the kids who have no supervision that get into trouble. Some people just don't have enough to do in their lives and have to create drama! Don't worry about.

Hang in there Mom! Iowa, for some unkown reason to me, is one of the most anti-gun states in the Union. Well, actually, it's that way because of the prevalent mindset of its citizens - which you experienced firsthand.

Your kids are welcome over at my place. (They'll need full gear though! I'm paranoid about eye injuries with paintball guns.)

Many people speak out without having all the facts. Those who do are not likely to listen to any explanation and why should you have to give it to strangers anyway..........

To thine own self be true. Who better has the best interests of your children at heart than you do!

Parenting styles differ greatly, but so far, there is no ONE WAY to do the job the best way.

Each child is different, even within families they require different types of parenting. You know your child. Be confident in your judgement. A strangers comments is certainly not an affirmation you would seek, why then would you consider their negative comments valid enough to question yourself? If you do, you are not firm in your resolve and that is another matter................

Perhaps, in hindsight, you would have liked to have handled the encounter in a different manner. If so, we (here at FG) could brain storm up some good responses for you to use if you are ever again in such a situation. To be armed with your defense before you need it would put a much different outcome to how you felt after being verbally attacked.

I think it's much more polite then I would be to anyone who dared to take me to task and infer i am not a good mother IN FRONT OF MY CHILD!

And just what in the hell did they think they were doing apporaching a child in this day and age? They're lucky that the crazy lady didn't shoot first IMO

Well, look at the example that was shown to the child, if you're worried about what's being said in front of him. I realize adults are supposed to pretend we don't see kids and god forbid we greet them pleasantly because we have to assume we're all child molesters, but this doesn't sound to me like it was two dudes in a park, approaching a little kid. I don't blame MIO for wanting to find out who was talking to her kid at all. I don't think it was an instance to get riled about however.

In the world we live in I don't think these ladies were too far out of line for questioning why a little boy is playing with a gun, whether it was real or for paintballs and whether his mother liked it or not. Take a look around. Turn on the news sometime. Look at the sh** we live in. We have people clocking each other because they part their hair the wrong way, teenagers shooting classmates and little kids playing with their dads' gun and accidentally killing people. We have neglectful, insipid adults masquerading as parents and it is certainly our right and duty as human beings in a society to question the bringing up and teaching of those who will be our fellow adults.

You don't have to agree with my opinion or like it, but MIO did ask for our opinion and that's what I gave. :)

Edited to correct spelling and to clarify that by insipid, neglectful adults, I am not referring to MIO as one.

flopstock wrote: No you most certainly don't! If nothing illegal is going on and that is explained to you politely.. it's your place to back off. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper if you choose, but you have no business or right to butt into anyones legal business, just because you don't approve of it!

She tried polite, that didn't satisfy the idiot.

Yes, we most certainly do!

If more people stepped in when they saw something untoward then maybe our society wouldn't be the cesspool that it is. Maybe if people stopped worrying about what others thought of their "butting in" then kids would grow up to be the respectful, worthy, self-respecting individuals they should be instead of gang bangers and dregs. I bet when you see someone beat their child in the store you say nothing because it's NOT YOUR BUSINESS. The raising of kids used to be the neighborhood's business because all adults were responsible for providing good examples for everybody's kids and now we have people whining, pissing and moaning about how only they know best how to raise their kid. Well guess what, IT ISN'T WORKING!!!

We have no LEGAL right but as I indicated, we have a societal right and obligation to do it.

I stand by my words. :D

Oh for gawd's sake. These nosey old bitches make it sound like your son was walking around flashing a glock. For the love of christ when will people ever learn to control themselves and not insinuate themselves into situations that do NOT concern them??? Anyone ever questions the manner in which I raise my son and the activities we take part in is gonna get the business end of my motorcycle boot up their ass.

Good for you, Mom, in standing up for yourself, and putting two busy-bodies in their place. Goofy old broads should be thankful they ran across you and not me.

I totally agree. That woman had no right to say what she did. It was VERY RUDE. She should have kept her opinion to herself. Live and let live I say.

I have boys too and we used to live in the country and they both had paint ball guns. The rule was this....Only shoot at the trees or a target or the legs. These were not high powered either. I payed all of 20 dollars for them. Anyway, we Never had a mishap or an injury. They eventually tired of them and ended up in the dump. I wouldn't recommend one in a subdivision because of neighbors windows and stuff.

I commend you MOM for spending time with your child!!!

As for the nosey, inconsiderate, rude fat a$$....she can stay on her side of the street!!

The example the adults should have shown was to show respect to the parent - you know, the parent that was present and supervising her kids - not to try to berate said parent in front of the kid. That's a big difference from seeing a kid doing something wrong, away from his parent, and calling him on it.

Dang Mom - I got questioned by my daughter's teachers all through elementary school AND by my own family about the "liberal ideas I was teaching her"............the only thing I could ever say was BULLSHIT!!!!

I happen to be a very conservative person who believes in FUN.......FUN......FUN. I wasn't really liberal in what I taught her. I taught her respect for herself, family and other people - no matter their race, religion or color.

I'll never forget the day a Child Social Services lady came to our house in the middle of a hose/ water gun fight. I was on the roof with the hose. Talk about a downer. The CSS lady told me that she didn't need to see that again------ever.

CSS was called because T-Girl told her teacher there was centipede in her bedroom - DUH............she left her door open after a rain. BTW they aren't poisonous centipedes here.

I just got back to read this and you guys crack me up..The funny part is when I went to conferences -there she was...LOL Oh well..I just smiled and walked on past - I am a bigger lady and no I should have not said Fat A$$ - but it was pretty funny... :p I believe in my children...I stand by what they are and that is polite and courteous to adults, teachers, family and their friends. I am not saying they are perfect but when my kids would rather have "family night" and jump on the tramp, grill out -or swim in the pool w/ me then go to the movies with their friends then I feel I have made the impact that family is the most important thing there is, and that life is short so LIVE IT TO THE FULLEST! I am not saying when they are older they will still think mom is COOL but I sure enjoy it now.....:D

I have a bit of a problem with paintball guns since they are the tool of choice for tagging my school and school sign and I have spent many an hour cleaning the blasted stuff off.

But as for giving guns to youngsters, I have to laugh. You see, it's human nature. I remember a story about a community in Maine that decided that toy guns were a bad influence on their children. So they banned the sale of all types of toy weapons.

The upshot?

The kids went out into the woods, found some gun-shaped sticks and had a blast of a day playing "war" with them!

So don't worry, Mom, you are a fine parent and your boy's urges are absolutely normal. But do me one small favor.... make sure you teach him which targets are appropriate and which aren't, OK?
