I watched a show last week that showed one of the states (Kentucky I think) that has run DNA tests on prisoners that have already been executed in that state. They have found two that were innocent and have decided to run tests on all that have been executed if DNA is available.

I was always in favor of the death penalty until just a couple of years ago when I decided that being put to death is no worse than going to sleep and not waking up. Depriving one of their freedom of movement and keeping them in a 6 x 10 cell for other than an hour a day is more of a punishment in my view.

Lethal injection. You might be thinking of Jeffery Dahmer.

A Friday (1/6/06) Martinsville Bulletin, Page 5-A story titled "DNA retesting ordered years after execution" stated the following:

"Richmond (AP) - Gov. Mark R. Warner on Thursday ordered DNA evidence retested to determine whether a man convicted of rape and muder was innocent when he was executed in 1992. If the testing shows Roger Keith Coleman did not rape and kill his sister-in-law in 1981, it will be the first time in the United States a person has been exonerated by scientific testing after his execution, according to death penalty opponents. Warner said he ordered the tests because of technological advances that could provide a level of forensic certainty no availaable in the 1980's."

Okay then, where was the Governor of Virginia, the death penalty opponents and the ACLU-types calling for this same testing in 1992 before the guy was brought to justice? Surely, DNA testing was available then.

The article went on to say:

"Coleman's case drew international attention. The articulate death row inmate pleaded his case on talk shows and in magazines and newspapers. He made the cover of Time magazine, and Pope John Paul II tried to block the execution. Then-Gov. Douglas Wilder was besieged with thousands of phone calls and letters from around the world. Warner, who is considering a presidential bid in 2008, has heard requests from death penalty opposition groups throughout his term to order the evidence retested."

Governor Warner leaves office this month. At least we know what this case is all about... presidential politics.

It was announced on 1/12/06 by Centurion Ministries that DNA test results for Roger K. Coleman confirmed his guilt, justifying his final justice of execution by the state. That report just happend to come one day after Gov. Mark Wraner gave his last State of the Commonwealth Address, just prior to leaving office. Presidential politics continue.....
