If your house was on fire

If your house was on fire, apart from human beings, what will be the first item you'll move to safety? Is it your pet, computer, clothes, car, books or what? Lets hear opinions!

After my family it would be photographs, we don't have any pets (my daughter is asthmatic).

Everything else can be replaced and its not worth risking your own life by staying in a burning smoke-infested building trying to rescue it!

My two kittens. Other than that, everything else is replaceable. But it's always wise to keep your important documents in a fireproof box.

I'd grab my purse and pets. With 3 cats, 2 dogs, and a cockateil, this may be tricky. Hope I never find out.

I'm not sure I would be able to to save anything apart from myself and the dog, Normally I am a very calm relaxed person but fire is a dread of mine, every house I have lived in for the first week or so I have planned fire exits in my sleep. I would no doubt ....PANIC...:eek:

The first thing I would save would be my own arse. Then in a fit of guilt I'd probably go back & get the cat. ..... ..... oh yeh, and the wife. :o

Then the following depending on where the fire was located.........

Jewlery, Stamps, Framed Pictures, Photographs, Silver, CD's of photos - - in no particular order as they are all in different locations in the house.

When I renovated this house I was required to put in fire detectors that are all connected - one goes off - they ALL go off. Given that every indoor wall is 18 inch adobe and only the pine vigas and plank board ceiling would burn - I'd save the family quilts and pictures because all us live things would be out in time. Yeah there are escape windows in every room.

Nor me! Raven also suggested a fireproof box which is a good idea because if a fire started when you weren't home, you wouldn't be able to rescue anything!

My friends mother keeps all the negatives from her photo's in a fire-proof safe! Which is also a good idea!

Also, Pina's suggestion of planning escape routes from every room! I DO do that and have fire alarms, but these are such easy things to overlook!

My arse and my granddaughter and daughter first.. then documents, pc, and pictures.. if possible clothes.. I would take as much out as I could and put it outside.. if not lives of loved ones are more important than anything..

If I think about it my PC has lot of stuff that can't be recreated so I would grab it..:-6

I have a plan in place for such events.. so I'm ready but you can't be prepared enough..

Actually when we had all the fires here that nearly burned San Diego down.. they got very close to my house so we already had to prepare once.. I also had to go and get the servers from our office and had them in my car till we could get back in the office.. We here in San Diego deal with fires alot..:(

We had an apartment catch fire 7 years ago. I swear I don't remember grabbing the kids but I did. My hubby and a friend at the time went in and got a rocking chair, tv, and vcr. I didn't care about anything but my family and friends. It was the first and only time I've ever hyperventilated. It was a 95% loss, but hey, I had my family and friends.

We had a tree branch come down on the electrical wires running to the house. It shorted out the fuse box in the garage and sent fire through the walls into the house. We did not have flames, but we did have a lot of smoke.

Our youngest daughter was the only one home at the time this occured. When she saw the smoke, like fingers creeping throught the house, she called 911 and then got the dog and two cats out of the house and over to our neighbors.

I was away that day at a conference and my husband was away for the day also. I got a call from my daughter and had to have someone drive me home, cause I did not drive that day, and came home to fire trucks and men all over the yard and house.

Smoke damage is not pleasant. We had to have someone come in and take all of our clothing, drapes etc out to be professionally cleaned. For two weeks I had only three outfits to wear to work.

My husband arrived home and walked into the house in semi-shock. I was in the midst of making arrangement to take the animals to the Vet to be checked out and to board them for the next couple of days. I quickly told him what had happened and off I went.

Our family stayed in a motel for the next 3 nights, all four of us in one room. Our oldest would barricade herself in the bathroom at night to be alone and to read.

This experience opened my husbands eyes as to how capable I really am. Being the take charge, decision making person that he is, I don't have much need to step forth and do it on my own, so he was thinking of me as the poor helpless woman :yh_rotfl , NOT!

We have no pets, so. . . . and as it was already pointed out by others, we keep all (most) of our valuable papers in "2" Fire Boxes. But you learn something new every day, as we "do not" have our favorite old pictures in a Fire Box, or Safe. We will as of today!!! Thanks Rapunzel. :-2

I forgot to tell you all that after they got the rocking chair, tv and vcr out of the apt. the front window blew out and melted the vcr and tv and burned the rocker anyway. Thinking about that now, it was actually funny! The lawyer for the apt complex wanted to sue us for $200,00. The manager told her not as long as he was in charge. We didn't have ins on anything, and it turned out to be faulty wiring anyway, so it wasn't our fault. She shut her mouth and dropped it. I love the fire inspectors! They save you from all sorts of BS from lawyers that want money only.

Had a fire once about 4 years ago, got my 3 kids out, followed by the dog.

Was tempted to take the computer but figured id feel a bit daft when the firemen came so left it inside :P

House was trashed, lost everything from upstairs but managed to salvage most of the downstairs contents, not nice ><
